In 1839, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewart Johnston attacked Union forces near Jeffersonville while they were marching across country towards Nashville; the battle resulted in heavy losses for both sides. One year later, Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army camped near Logansport ahead of his march westward towards Nashville after routing Confederate forces at Perrysburg; during this campaign he ordered General John Custer to lead a cavalry squadron northward upriver towards Jeffersonville so as not to alert Confederate artillery batteries located along riverbank betweenLogansportandJeffersonvillettexpectingtoshootatthe retreating Union column under cover of darkness while its troops crossed over pontoon bridgeshead upstream from their encampment
