Jasper, Indiana is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. The first permanent white settler in Jasper was David Smith who arrived in 1827. He built the first log cabin on the current site of the town and named it "Erie." In 1830, he married Susanna Painter and they produced five children. By 1834, David had developed a mill which processed lumber from the surrounding pine forests. The mill closed around 1840 but later reopened as a sawmill with his son John Custer running it until 1861 when it burned down. In 1836, Isaac Neely settled in Jasper and began to develop land that would become known as Neely Township. He bought of land from David Smith for $200 and laid out roads and buildings on it including a schoolhouse and store. By 1840, he had also erected several churches in Jasper including one called "The Baptist" which still stands today. around this time too some other early settlers such as Arent Brown started coming to join the growing community including Nathaniel Sears who came overland from Ohio in 1839 followed by Wm Hargrave in 1840 John Fenton moved into Jasper about 1840 with his family following news of General Andrew Jackson's victory at New Orleans during the Mexican–American War. They built their first home hereabouts on what is now Second Street between Main and State Streets (now Meridian Avenue). Here they raised chickens for eggs then turned them into hogs which were fattened by burning brush near their new homestead before being sold to local farmers for meat or pork products. For many years there was also an old blacksmith shop on West Main Street just east of what is now First Street where Mr Fenton operated his forge until 1870 when he traded it away to Elijah Kinsley for tools used by him as well as an old farm house that still stands today
