When Fort Wayne was destroyed by fire in 1834, he sent wagons laden with food back downriver to help rebuild that fortification. In 1840, Colonel Ebenezer Elliott founded what would become known as Elliott's Mills which processed cottonseed oil into candles and soap products until 1861 when that company merged with another called Ewing & Company to form lye Works Manufacturing Company (LWMC). That company continued making those products until1929 when it merged with another manufacturer to form Wickersham-Elliott Corporation (WEPCO). Because of this merger process, most people associated with Jasper now refer to themselves simply as "jasperites."
