Jasper, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County,Indiana. The population was 13,056 at the 2010 census. Jasper is located in the west central portion of Vanderburgh County on the north side of the Arkansaw River. It is bordered to the east by Dunkirk Township and to the south by Mount Carmel Township. The first settler in Jasper was John Denton who arrived in 1814. The town site was surveyed in 1827 by Captain James Wilkinson and named for General George Washington's aide-de-camp, Jasper Hill. A post office called "Jasper" was established in 1830, and remained open until it closed in 1906. The name originated from General Washington's visit to that location during his march through Pennsylvania prior to his inauguration as President of the United States on January 20, 1789. A courthouse was built near present day intersection of Elm and Main Streets in 1837; it burned down but was replaced by a new courthouse which still stands today. Other early businesses included a tannery, grocery store, flour mill and carriage factory before they were displaced by more important towns within what would become Vanderburgh County such as Greencastle or Harrisonburg which began growing rapidly after investors discovered coal deposits near present day Jasper. By 1860, most residents living within what would become Jasper had removed to larger communities nearer economic opportunity while those living further away continued to decline due largely to transportation constraints including no travel connections between larger towns outside of Vanderburgh County and small town farmers offering goods only available when someone traveled far enough into neighboring counties for purchase Jasper became an agricultural community with extensive corn production becoming dominant during this time frame In 1880 when local resident Olin Waddell donated 7 acres (2 ha) northeast of center field now known as Waddell Park for public school use he forever changed things regarding education when he also founded Indiana State Normal School adjacent thereto which remains one of college level degree granting institutions throughout Indiana today making it one stop for students seeking higher education at any stage thereof In 1907 when oil wells were drilled close to town Jaspers 1st Electric Light Company was born providing instantaneous electricity within minutes at current prices then $0 per kWh

The first European to visit Jasper, Indiana was French Father Antoine de Saint-Pierre in 1795. The area now known as Jasper was part of the Shawnee Nation and was visited by the French in search for fur traders. In 1814, the United States acquired this region from the Shawnee Nation and renamed it after General Andrew Jackson. As a result of this acquisition, much of what is now Jasper County lay within present-day Butler County. In 1846, Jasper became part of then-Indiana Territory when that territory was created from parts of Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. The following year, Jasper County was named for General James K. Polk during his factional campaign against John C. Fremont in the US presidential election of 1848. Jasper County saw some significant growth between 1850 and 1860 due to its proximity to Louisville and other major cities in Kentucky and Indiana. This growth led to increased development around the county seat at Jasper with construction of jails, schools and other infrastructure necessary for rapid population growth. Duringthe American Civil War (1861-1865), many people from eastern Kentucky Came down south looking for work on plantations near Louisville while others tried to cross over into Union territory through Union states like Missouri or West Virginia so they could vote but were turned back at various points along the way including at Fort Donelson where Confederate General Robert Ewell abandoned his army attempting to pass through Union territory into Tennessee on April 9, 1862. This failed attack marked one of several attempts by Confederate forces to gain entry into northern Indiana Territory though all failed due largely to strong Union fortifications located within these same boundaries today including Fort Henry which is still home to an Army post garrisoned by troopsmen today as well as numerous small lakes surrounding it allowing visitors access throughout most days thanks also to a nearby river which makes navigation very easy).
