Jasper, Indiana is a small town in central Youngstown County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,995 at the 2010 census. Jasper is the county seat of Youngstown County. It was founded in 1824 as a post office and settlement on the Scioto River by General John Sedgwick. The first settler in Jasper was David Bardwell who arrived in 1825. He built a cabin on the riverbank and named it Bardwell's Ferry after himself and his brother-in-law, Daniel Bardwell. The first store in Jasper was built by James Pritchard in 1829. The first school in Jasper was started by Mrs. Sarah Allred on July 6, 1830 with nine students enrolled. In 1833, General William Cranch decided to move the county seat from Wilkes-Barre to Jasper because of its strategic location between Wilkes-Barre and Toledo on the Maumee River system and lack of available land elsewhere within Youngstown County for housing development purposes. In 1840, when Wyoming Territory was created out of part of Youngstown County, General John Sedgwick became its first governor and ordered all new settlements within that territory to be named afterGeorge Washington (Washington Heights/Dover), Thomas Jefferson (Fayetteville/Greencastle), James Kossuth (Kansas City), or Andrew Johnson (Atlanta). When Territorial Governor Simon Cameron refused to obey this order and placed Wilkes-Barre instead upon the Scioto River while settlers were stillassembling at Bardwell's Ferry due to incorrectly believing that Washington Heights would be included withinYoungstown County limits , two additional stores were opened by Jno Wadsworth & Co., located opposite each other on State Street just west of present day Broadway Avenue until they were destroyed during an arson fire which took place November 5th 1861 killing fifteen people including Wadsworth" - This event is documented as "The Great Fire of Jasper".
