Jasper, Indiana is a small town in the northwest corner of Hoosier County, Indiana, United States. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. Jasper was founded by John Jasper in 1823. It was named for General James K. Polk who served as President of the United States from 1845 to 1849. The Village of Jasper had a post office from 1842 until it was discontinued in 1907. For many years, it was reported that the only store in town operated out of an old house on Fourth Street which also served as the schoolhouse and jail. A new store opened up just south of town on Third Street in 1895 and continued to be run by the same family until it closed its doors in 2003. In 1907, the first water tower went up and Jasper had two telephone lines- one each side of Main Street- making it one of only a few townships with both types of service back then! The first gasoline station opened up next door to First Baptist Church (now known as Old First Baptist) on Main Street around 1910 and started selling fuel directly to motorists! By 1920 there were three churches (First Baptist; Second Baptist; Methodist) all with their own theological seminary, boiler shop, lumberyard and other businesses downtown combined! There were no schools or hospitals until after World War II when they began to come about through various donations or acquisition by surrounding municipalities In 1955, construction began on what is now Riverfront Stadium which would become home to both local high school football games as well as various professional events including soccer games between Indy Eleven and English club Bournemouth & Southampton FC during both 2005 & 2006 seasons – this being right before Riverfront Stadium became Indianapolis’s new public stadium Two years later (in 1957), Interstate 65 passed just west of town center lanes off I-465 spurring further development including more housing built along Shepard Road east of I-465 prior toExit 291A near present day Harding High School . This area would eventually become known as “Jasper Heights” today due to heavy buildout over time . Finally in 1959 when US 60 bypassed towncenter entirely causing even more growth within boundaries but without any major reroute or changeOHPHA originally predicting a population losssaw 3 car dealership open downriver from current day Hendricks High School across SR 527 , still operating under Bridgeport name today This area would become known as “Olde Hickory Place”
