On their arrival in Indiana they married John Ballard and started a successful grocery business that prospered for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In the late 1800s other businesses followed suit: A flour mill opened in 1892; an electric light company started up in 1907; and a post office was established on December 12th, 1908. By 1920 there were 10 stores operating within one mile of each other providing services such as groceries (4), laundry (3), dry goods (6), hardware (1) and automobiles (1). In 1932 two brothers - Harry Vail and Donnell Ryan - opened the first Store No 6 on Main Street which became one of the most important businesses in town throughout its early years.� It can be said that without Harry Vail’s entrepreneurial spirit much would have not changed about Jasper over these past 136 years.� Heading into his nineties he still owned several businesses within minutes walking distance of his home.� Today we are blessed with many more options for shopping than ever before� especially due to satellite television which offers night Shopping Mornings! It wasn't until 2002 when Walmart decided to open their doors here that things really began to change.� At first it was only forhunters/ farmers who needed fresh produce but today Walmart offers nearly everything under one roof� even pet supplies! Today Jasper celebrates its 375th anniversary with events like Pioneer Days which honor local heroes � such as soldiers who fought during World War II or those who served our country during 9/11 � along with also having an annual Pumpkinfest., Arts & Crafts Festival.,Civic Center Days.� There are also various agricultural shows held throughout fallujahrist season.� This diverse calendar allows residents plenty opportunity to get involved both locally AND statewide!
