Jasper, Indiana is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Jasper is the county seat of Hendricks County. Jasper was founded by Winfield Scott in 1838 as a post office and trading post on the then-new Indian Creek Trail. It became an incorporated village in 1851 and a city in 1907. The present downtown area of Jasper was built between 1928 and 1930 as part of the city's growth after becoming an incorporated town. The first white person to live in what is now Jasper was John Smith who settled there in 1838 with his family from Massachusetts. He named it "Jasper" for the location on the James River where he had seen rocks bearing that name before leaving for America. A small log cabin stood near this first settlement until about 1840 when it burned down due to Indians raiding it nightly during their winter hunting trips upstream from the settlement site. When President Andrew Johnson signed Executive Order 13771 on November 16, 1865 authorizing military Reconstruction in South Carolina following Confederate victory at Appomattox Court House, he ordered all American forces withdrawn from South Carolina except for those stationed at Fort Pillow which would remain under Ulysses S Grant's command until April 1865 when they were transferred to General Sherman's command effective May 6th.. On November 17th 1865 local citizens meeting at the Log Cabin erected a monument to commemorate this event which still stands today (See photo above). In 1870s two brothers by the name of Fenton bought land adjoining what is now Jasper and began farming there before moving eastward into current day Hendricks County around 1900 Fenton also served as mayor of Jasper from 1925-1927 . The first post office here opened on December 10th 1830 under name "Hendricksville". There are several theories about why this particular post office changed its name: One theory suggests because early settlers living near forks of Indian Creek had trouble distinguishing between these two Rivers; another theory suggests because one brother owned both riverside tracts; finally another theory suggests that simply because no other letters appeared initialy upon opening many people decided to call their new tract "Jasper" since no other community bore that name within five miles radius

The population grew rapidly during the early 1800s, and by 1827, Jasper had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1850, Jasper became a county seat of Posey County. In 1915, the city of Jasper was renamed Indianapolis after General George Custer's funeral procession through the city.
