The Continental Congress ordered Nicholas-Jacques Conte to bring over 1,000 pounds of lead bullets from France to be used in training troops at Fort Dearborn. A small Quantity of this ammunition was also distributed among local militias for their protection. For example, during World War II pistols were introduced that required more powerful rounds than earlier guns. In 1814, a group of settlers named John and Elizabeth Kapp purchased land in what is now Jasper County and began building a cabin. The first Ammunition Depot on this property was built in 1816. The Kapps were the first white people to live in what is now Jasper County. They started manufacturing shot, cannon balls, and other munitions here. By the 1840s, Arsenal Ammunition had become one of the largest companies in the United States. A local mill also produced flour for local businesses and consumers. In 1850, Andreas Boesch founded Arrow Manufacturing Company here with his brother Rudolph as its president. Arrow manufactured rifles, shotguns, pistols, ammunition products, and more until it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1907. In 1854-1855 two brothers named Cushman opened a mercantile store at 11th Street and Meridian Avenue in what is now North Bend. This was the first store west of Indianapolis that sold ammunition by weight from reloading facilities located east of town near Fort Wayne (then called Vincennes). The Cushmans were prominently involved in local gun politics during this time period as they supplied arms for several key political leaders including Simon Cameron (the founder of modern day Indianapolis) and Stephen Auld (founder of Dearborn Heights). In 1861 Colts Armory opened on Liberty Street just north of downtown Jasper as one of many small arsenals scattered throughout Indiana Territory during this time period due to limitations on available federal firearms funding at that point in history. It served both militaries/ law enforcement officers and civilians until bought out by Remington Arms Company in 1912-1913 following World War I moratorium against military production while civilian production continued through 1919 under various names including Regal Ammunition & Gun Works Inc., American Armory Corporation & Crosman Arms Corporation before becoming Remington Arms Co., Ltd.) After World War II small manufacturers closed their doors or were bought out by larger companies such as Colt Firearms Company which closed down all but one factory statewide between 1945-1948 when it merged into Ford Firearms Corp.; Savage Arms company which closed down its plant adjacent to North Bend; Brownells Plastics company which shuttered its plant next door to Indianola; Geisseldt Ammo company which discontinued operations after producing only .22LR ammo since 1915; Olympic Ammunition company which ceased operations after producing only lead shot since 1908; Alliant Armament Industries parent company NRA who moved their parent headquarters from Springfield Missouri across state lines into tabernacle shaped facility just northeast of Danville Illinois where they currently operate today - serving all 50 U.S states plus Dauphin County Kansas with their counterparts at Wichita KS - making them perhaps America’s leading firearms manufacturer
