In 1892, Indianapolis became the capital of Indiana. In that year, its first city hall was built and in 1912, the General Assembly moved to Indianapolis from Terre Haute. The following year, a new school building was erected and in 1916, the state legislature moved into the new wing of the old Indiana Statehouse. On November 3 of that year, an amendment to the Constitution was ratified which provided for a consolidated government within three branches—the Governor, Senate and House of Representatives. The three branches were then divided into two houses each with voting power only in favor of apportionment among themselves. The first city hall building (1892) served as both seat of government and municipal court until it burned down in 1903. In 1915-16 a new school building replaced the original one which had been destroyed by fire in 1911. In 1927-28 a bridge over I-465 was completed which connected Indianapolis with neighboring town of Carmel on Lake Michigan. A municipally owned electric light company was established in 1935 and changed its name to Municipal Power Company of Indiana (MPCI). It operated until 1984 when it merged with United Industries plc to form Indian Corporation Electric Light & Manufacturing Co., Incorporated (ICELM). In 1814, Indiana became the 21st state to be admitted to the United States of America. The state's name was chosen by a group of Indians who met in nearby Jacksonville, Florida to deliberate on what would be the new state's official name. After a few different choices were considered, they settled on Indianapolis as the name for their new landlocked territory. The first known reference to Indianapolis is in an account written by French explorer and fur trader Pierre Le Moyne Cadillac in 1785. Cadillac described an Indian village east of present-day Indianapolis that he had visited while exploring the area nearpresent-day Fort Wayne. He noted that the people living there "were very good people" and that they were "a great numerous nation." In 1800, whenIndiana was still part of Canada, Fort Hamilton was built on what is now State Road 7 outside of present-dayIndianapolis to serve as a military base for Canadian troops stationed in northern Indiana. The city's growth during this time can be seen in its various nicknames: "the City of Light," "TheBirthplace of American Democracy," and "Cityof Hope." One early resident, James Monaghan, named his business street after himself - Monaghan & Company - which later became one of downtown Indy's most popular businesses. In 1847, when Marion County was created from parts of Posey County, Indianapolis became one of its first county seats. The following year saw construction begin on the first courthouse in what is now downtown Indy. By 1870, over 500 buildings had been erected within the city limits; it remained an industrial center into the 20th century and played a significant role in both world wars
