As time passed, however, Indiana became one of America's most influential states. In 1816, General James H. Logan founded the city of Indianapolis as a military post on land that had been purchased by him from the Miami tribe of Indians. The city grew rapidly and by 1824 it had a population of over 100,000 people. It was at this point that General Logan decided to name Indianapolis "The City on the Lake." By 1830, Indianapolis had become an important transportation hub because it was located on both the Ohio River and White River. In 1836, Governor Thomas Dixon appointed David Capps as superintendent of schools for Indiana Territory. At this time, education was very important in Indiana and Capps believed that education would be key to making Indianapolis a successful community. He made several significant investments in education including building two public schools and providing free school supplies to students throughout the territory. This investment paid off and by 1840 there were more than 80 public schools in operation in Indiana Territory! During this time period also came major changes to Indy's landscape with construction beginning on what is today known as Rickenbacker Park which opened in 1907
