Airguns have been around for over a hundred years and are still being used today in Indianapolis, Indiana. The first airguns were invented in 1876 by George Stephenson and they were called “shotguns”. The first airgun powder was developed in 1902 and it was called “powdered shot”. In 1907, the first airgun club was founded in Indianapolis and it was called the American Rifleman Club. In 1916, the first state indoor target range was built in Indianapolis and it was called the American Riflemen Shooting Range. In 1937, the Colts company introduced their very own airgun which became known as the Colt Air Pistol. This machine gun-style airgun had a magazine that held ten rounds of ammunition. It could be fired with either one or two hands and it had a stock that allowed you to hold it like a rifle. It also featured an adjustable trigger which made it easy to shoot targets at close range. On October 3rd of 1944, the last regular shooting match on the original American Riflemen Shooting Range took place and this event is considered to be one of the most significant days in airgun history because this is when both Remington Arms Company and Browning Repeating Arms Company joined forces to create what would become America’s largest firearms company (Browning). During World War II, Indianapolis experienced some extremely intense bombing raids which caused extensive damage to both businesses and homes; however, no lives were lost as a result of these bombings. Additionally, during World War II there also began development of anti-aircraft guns which are now known as cannons; however, at that time there wasn’t enough available technology for these guns to work properly so they were only used against other airplanes rather than people. Throughout all of these years there has never been any type of ban on using Air Guns in Indianapolis; however, there have been changes throughout the years such as updated designations for different types of weapons (e.g., pistols have now become rifles) which makes them more difficult for individuals who do not know how to use them safely

In 1892, Indianapolis businessman John F. Kennedy submitted a proposal to the city for the establishment of an airgun range. The range would be located on Second Street in downtown Indianapolis and it would offer instruction to civilians and law enforcement officers. In 1895, the City Council voted in favor of the proposal and authorized Mayor John Beecham to build a rifle range on land leased from the Indiana Agricultural Society. The first airgun match was held at Beecham's Range on November 3, 1895. The race to establish an airgun industry in Indianapolis was fierce; three companies made bids for the rights to construct an airgun shooting complex: Alcorn-Gorman, Ransom-Hogan, and White & Co.] On December 8, 1897, Mayor Beecham awarded Alcorn-Gorman with the contract to build and operate an airgun range facility on land that they had leased from the Indiana Agricultural Society. The company set up shop at 5th and State Streets in Indianapolis within weeks of getting approval from city officials. On February 12, 1898, Alcorn-Gorman opened its doors to public inspection; initial attendance was meager but quickly grew as people discovered how enjoyable gun Shooting could be. By September 1898, Alcorn-Gorman had built a two-story office building adjacent to theirrange which served as their headquarters while they continued construction of their other facilities across town including a training ground for young officers as well as a market place where customers could buy ammunition and guns. Ransom-Hogan also applied for permission to build an airgun range within striking distance of downtown Indianapolis; however this application was denied on October 30th 1897 due to concerns over fire hazards posed by ongoing construction projects near Grange Park which housed several amusement parks at that time]. White & Co., who were considered frontrunners among those vying for rights to build an industrial park next door (the development eventually became known as Greenfield), applied unsuccessfully for permission just days after Ransom-Hogan's application was rejected]]. As competition heated up between companies seeking access tothe limited airspace around downtown Indianapolis there began what is now known as "The Gun Race" - both men scrambledto secure permits and permissions from various government entities in order ot open their respective ranges without fear of infringing upon others'.
