Polk's daughter Mary Anna Chase (1802-1870). In 1846, General Arthur Stoneman founded Stonemanville on land that he had purchased from Delaware trader Nicholas Biddle Jr.. Huntington was founded in 1824 by George Washington Huntington, a surveyor and landowner. The city of Huntington was platted in 1829, and the first post office was established in 1830. In 1836, the Indiana General Assembly passed a bill creating the county of Huntington with its own government. But no one moved to Huntington until after the American Civil War when veterans returned home and began farming the area. By 1870, Hancock County had a population of 5,000 people and it became part of larger Indiana Territory. The town of Huntington was established on what is now State Road 47 as a trading post in 1870; it rapidly grew into an agricultural center with mills, stores and homes. By 1920, the population had grown to 100,000 people and it became an important commercial center with manufacturing plants such as Armour & Co., Wabash Railroad Company and Jardine Matthey Company among its citizens. During World War II, Huntington played an important role as a munitions storage depot for the war effort; it also housed military barracks for soldiers spread throughout southern Indiana. In 1970-71, Huntington experienced significant redevelopment which included construction of new housing developments as well as businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Allstate Insurance Company and Chrysler Corporation headquarters; this structure is still standing today within downtown areas of the city limits. During recent decades, however, Huntington has been facing declining population rates due to migration from rural areas to urban areas across Indiana; although there are some remaining industries such as steel production which have seen strong growth over recent years. However, despite these challenges (and others), including efforts by city government to attract more businesses through marketing campaigns), overall crime rates have decreased significantly over time while infrastructure remains inadequate for future growth needs.
