By 1851, Huntington boasted a hotel, two churches and over 100 businesses including several stores and mills along main streets such as College Avenue and Erie Boulevard. By 1870, it had become known as one of America's leading center for lace making because of its proximity to looms used in producing fabric for hats, coats and dresses. A tornado touched down near Huntington on November 3rd 1910 killing thirteen people within three miles (five kilometers) of the town center while damaging over 150 homes and businesses which included many factories engaged in production related industries such as textiles, shoes and automobiles. In 1922, after years of construction work associated with First World War veterans returning home from overseas service there was finally completed a new courthouse building which replaced an earlier structure destroyed by fire in 1905. This addition helped make Huntington one of America's most vibrant communities during this period characterized by both industrial growth as well as increased development opportunities thanks to Interstate 70 which connected much of Indiana with Illinois en route to Chicago; making it easy for manufacturersand entrepreneursto compete with larger eastern cities without having to leave their homes or go through weeks or even months long delays when getting product into marketplaces across rural America
