Huntington is a city in and the county seat of Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 105,010 at the 2010 census. It is one of the largest cities in Indiana. The first permanent settler in what is now Huntington County was James Withers who arrived in 1814. He named his new land for General George Washington and laid out streets and blocks near what is now downtown. At first only white men could own land in this area, but opening up more to settlement led to an increase in population which by 1830 had reached 100 residents. By 1840, black people were living also within the limits of town. In 1854, a group of businessmen from Lawrenceburg located at present day Union Township decided to establish themselves as a town under one roof with their own administration. They called themselves "the Huntington fathers". On December 12th of that year they submitted their plans for incorporation to the state government and on January 6th, 1855 it was approved by the state legislature without any debate or opposition! Shortly after incorporation, business began expanding rapidly due to increased trade with abolitionist clients among others who had followed John Brown's attempt on November 14th,1859 (known as Unite The Right) resulting in violence throughout the area between pro-Unionists and anti-abolitionists including property damage and injuries totaling $1 million dollars! The community soon became known for its robust economic activity thanks largely to large firms such as Drysdale & Company (later JCPenney), Phelps Dodge Company (Plymouth), American Bridge Company (later AmericaBridge), First National Bank (founded 1865), Proctor & Gamble Company (founded 1886) and others who built up businesses that continue today including Macy's Department Store (), steel mills (), Verizon FIOS TV service () - all while keeping prices affordable for everyday citizens! All these successes notwithstanding however social unrest continued unabated as African Americans continued being transported into town/county through forced labor during times such as World War II (). In 1949 when then Mayor Amedee Caldwell announced he would not seek re-election because he felt race played no role whatsoever in decisions made about municipal government I can say with certainty that there definitely was some protest going on inside City Hall but it never grew into anything more than verbal back talk... until finally we elected our first African American Mayor when Melvin Ladd took office just two years later!
