Huntington is a town in Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The town was laid out in 1825 by Nicholas Hennepin. It became an incorporated village in 1868. The post office was first established in 1826 and operated until it closed in 1903. In 1907, the town merged with Carmel to form what is now Huntington-Carmel. The explorer and soldier George Rogers Clark discovered and named the site for his home county of New York on July 8, 1779, while exploring the Ohio Country near present-day Carmel. German immigrants had settled here prior to this time and started cattle raising operations in what is today Huntington Creek Township. A small community developed around this early ranching operation known as "the Gros Ventre" due to its high altitude (above mean sea level). In 1830, Nicholas Hennepin organized a Methodist church which grew into one of the largest religious groups in central Indiana when it bought land from Parson John Stephenson for $1 million (equivalent to ). He also began a school system that eventually would encompass all of Huntington County including parts of Noblesville and Plainfield township (now Plainfield). By 1840 there were over 150 residents living within the limits of what would become Huntington; many more participated in nearby villages like Carmel or Noblesville during their day-to-day lives. Hennepin's mill opened up commercial opportunities for local farmers that had beennil before because transportation connections between Carmel and points east were still very poor. The first store opened up on Main Street just north of where current Lafayette Avenue meets South Meridian Street just after Independence Day weekend of 1847/48 – making it one of only a handful such stores open along what would become known as main street through downtown Indianapolis during that time period! In 1850–51 James Whetstone built a gristmill on South Meridian Street which became one of Indy's most important water supply facilities with its own wellhead located on present day First National Bank building lot across from Huffman Park today!
