After the war ended, Huntington started growing more diverse and its population increased so much that it needed another arsenal- this time at its current location on Main Street. Huntington, Indiana is a small town located in Hancock County,Indiana. The population was 5,372 at the 2010 census. Huntington is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is home to the Lucas Oil Stadium and other large venues used by American football and other sports events. It has a primary economy based on services provided by local businesses; retail trade is smaller than in nearby cities. The first Europeans to visit what is now Huntington were fur traders from Canada in 1814. A post office was established in 1823, but it did not gain popularity until after the railroad arrived in 1836. The townspeople named their community after General John Marshall's nephew, Huntington (1784-1850). On December 12, 1847, Mayor George Wirtz organized the first public meeting of Hancock County when he proposed that the county be divided into two districts to avoid having too many people living within one district which would have been against state law. At this meeting residents voted 3-1 to form a new county with an area of . The name for the new county was chosen as it was thought to be more appropriate than any of the existing namesakes: Jefferson or Posey for Indiana and Washington for Illinois Territory (then called Michigan Territory). The original courthouse building stood on Broad Ripple Road east of present day Donnelley Road until demolished in 1935 due to its age and condition; however, an extant replica still stands today on West Main Street near where it once stood. A second courthouse building also sat on Broad Ripple Road before being destroyed by fire in 1955; however an extant replica still stands today on Dunlap Avenue just outside of town limits. In addition to serving as both governmental buildings during its early years, another important structure built soon afterwards was the Masonic Temple which currently serves as a museum inside of its original Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style design dating back to 1889-90 under direction of architect Oscar Gratzner and builder James Laughlin Jr.. This temple also served as a polling place prior to becoming fully operational after being dedicated on November 10th 1890 with all male citizens voting at this location known as "Hancockville". The current Masonic Temple complex lies adjacent thereto across Donnelley Road from what used to be Market St., although there are no remains remaining from that portion of Market Street itself thus making it difficult if not impossible actually visiting either building directly from downtown Indy proper - you'll need driving! In March 1930s (or so) new additions were made including additional business space along E curence Ave., southwest corner Of First St.–this alley now typically contains both University Center & Republic National Bank Parking Garage–making this one stop’s worth your time if you ever visit Downtown Indy while conducting some shopping errands! Plus don’t forget Old Town Square –formerly known as “the square” situated between First & Second streets NW corner thereof features several arts/crafts stores/gallery etc… plus plenty of restaurants thrown into that mix!!! On July 14, 1927, Indianapolis Colts player Art Rooney Sr., owner and founder of The Rooney Tire Corporation (now Goodyear Tire & Rubber) purchased a tract of land northwest of downtown that would become home to his new stadium complex; he named it "Rooney Stadium" after his father-in-law's businesses with that name. This stadium hosted both the NFL's Colts (1934–1939) and NBA's Indianapolis Olympians (1938). On October 17th, 1954–the date which has been celebrated annually as Colts Day–the first game ever played at "Rooney Stadium" resulted in a 0-0 tie against Philadelphia Eagles Navy Rifles playing under green helmets against local high school teams from Vineland and Perrysburg because National Football League rules did not allow championship games between leagues' second-placeTeams until 1946 The following year on November 3rd through 5th NFL Championship Game – also known as Super Bowl I – while football fans across America were watching at their televisions due to live NBC telecasts from Hollywood – then Mayor George Caton Junior announced that "ROONEY STADIUM WILL BE THE NEW HOME OF THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS IN 1951!" With this news headline throughout metropolitan Indianapolis during much restless nights leading up to game day Caton convened members City Council who met behind closed doors on October 15th where they voted 6-3 to appropriate $225,000 towards purchasing 8 acres east sideof downtown near present day First National Bank building! This site would come to be called Lucas Oil Stadium after oil magnate Ewing Marion Lucas donated $500K toward its construction! A few days later all bids had been received and contracts were let for work began immediately upon receipt! Work stopped only when President Dwight Eisenhower prohibited any further construction due to environmental concerns!!! The original plans called for roofless boxes measuring 50’ X 30’ with concrete Intrusion Pads installed plus 4 stories tall steel frame support system above with domed ceiling/skylight canopy provided for ultimate luxury !! After protests by nearby homeowners who felt their homes might be destroyed if stadiums were built on their property – including some who actually financed these stadiums themselves such as Jay Leno himself – those plans changed and instead exposed metal frameworks beneath concrete intrusions instead!! Nearby residents continue protesting various changes even unto this day…..though never successful
