Huntington was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Huntington and became an incorporated town in 1836. The city was named after John C. Huntington, one of the brothers who founded Indianapolis. The first post office in Huntington opened on December 12, 1814, and remained open until it was discontinued on November 1, 1865. The first residents were Nicholas and John Huntington who founded the city with $2 each. They named their new settlement after their father-in-law General James Kapp Harrison who had been killed during the War of 1812 and their brother-in-law Colonel George Rogers Clark which led to their settlement being called "Clarkstown." In 1840, John C. Huntington donated land for a public school system which would eventually become known as Danville High School; today's high school stands on that same donation from John C. Huntington. In 1861, when Indianapolis became an independent city it passed a ordinance establishing a Town Council; this council later became what is now known as the City Council of Indianapolis The City of Indianapolis annexed part of neighboring Hammondsport in 1907; however because Hammondsport limits its growth to only two blocks north and east of its original boundaries it never annexed much else from other municipalities within its limits including Deerfield Township to the south and west while still maintaining certain autonomy within its own jurisdiction The annexation caused some tension between both cities but ultimately nothing came about that would materially affect either municipality In 1916Danville voters approved passage of an ordinance forming the present day downtown area around State Street between Elmwood Avenue and South Meridian Street as well as plans for additional development along State Street northward into Dearborn Heights (later renamed Monrovia) This newly erected downtown district remains today one of Greater Indianapolis' most vibrant areas with many popular restaurants and nightlife options available
