Huntington, Indiana is a city located in the state of Indiana. The population was 66,291 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in and the county seat of Huntington County. In 1848, Indianapolis entrepreneur George Stephenson founded the first electric street light in Indianapolis with two small battery-powered lamps. In 1876, Stephenson donated land to create what is now known as First National Bank Park, which was home to the City Market from 1886 until it closed in 1995. In 1907, General Motors Corporation purchased a controlling interest in First National Bank Park and built their plant on site. The plant operated until 1957 when it was merged into GM's other American subsidiary; this left Huntington with only one electric street light remaining from before 1907. As part of its celebration of Purdue University's centennial year in 2013 and recognizing "The People's City" for its long history as an important center for education and industry, Mayor Tom Barrett announced that First National Bank Park would be reopened as a full museum honoring Purdue University's legacy within Huntington County. Today, Huntington has become an important center for research and technology due to its location within close proximity to several major universities including Purdue University and Indiana State University along with various government ministries including Homeland Security Department and Defense Logistics Agency among others. Additionally, many restaurants and businesses have opened up shop around town recently making it more lively than ever before!

The first European settlement in what would become Huntington was by French traders in 1785. The original name for the township was "Pontiac". The community grew quickly due to its location on the Usenet torrent and its easy access to transportation including a Butterfield Overland Mail route that ran through it. In 1827, three brothers founded the first post office in what would become Huntington when they received an order from Postmaster General James K. Polk to open a post office within 30 days of receiving their patent for their invention of a postal card. As with so many early American towns, growth led to controversy as landowners began seeking title to parcels they did not own and businesses became established without proper planning or zoning ordinances which resulted in some residents struggling during difficult times like the Great Famine of 1893-1894 when prices for food were high and jobs scarce. In 1860, Andrew Carnegie invested $5,000 into building a small schoolhouse near where he lived in nearby Steptoe Township but never used it because he soon abandoned his plans for an industrial city located on White River (now known as Northside). He donated land for the new city limits which included much of what now makes up Huntington including all of Pontiac Township along with Chestnut Hill Road and parts of Steptoe Township west of I-465 and south of US Highway 12A (later I-465). With this donation came Charter No. 3 which granted control over local government by citizens who voted on resolutions passed by City Council whether or not they should continue serving after incorporation into Indianapolis on November 1st 1864 as “Huntington” had been renamed four years earlier following annexation by Indianapolis from Steptoe Township; however there continued to be some conflict over governance between City Council members who wanted full power while others preferred less centralized authority With increased industry coming online such as breweries and tanneries starting up along I-465 during World War II, more people started moving into HuntingtonIvindicating its status as an important agricultural center; however during peacetime most residents engaged in agriculture or other low paying jobs outside their homes either working farms or manufacturing products exported back home until 1965 when federal troops arrived stationed at Fort Harrison allowing greater commercial development inside city limits The increase in traffic caused bridges over two canals built around 1920s closedadesCENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT #1 & 2 becoming obsolete&REAL ESTATE AVE becoming YEARLY STRUCK BY A REAL ESTATE DISASTER resultingin nearly one hundred structures being destroyed & HUNTINGTON HALL losing almost every window face due to extreme weather conditions leading to severe structural damage requiring replacement costing nearly $10M dollars just prior to 2013 .
