The city was founded in 1824 by Daniel Webster and named for General George Washington. The first post office in Huntington was established on October 15, 1825. In 1827, the town of Indianola was established adjacent to present-day Huntington and became the official name of that town until it merged with Huntington in 1907. The area that would become Huntington was settled by fur traders in 1795 and their descendants continued to live there until after Indiana became a state on November 1, 1816. On February 22, 1824, Daniel Webster moved his family from Hartford Connecticut to what is now known as Phelps Township (then part of Mayfield Township), west of present-day downtown Indianapolis. He claimed land east of the current downtown area which he called "Huntington". On December 16, 1830 Uniontown/Phelpsville (now part of Evansville) were organized as a village under the direction of John Watts located on what is now North Meridian Street between Market and Prospect Streets; this village served as an important feeder town for Hannibal during the American Civil War because it had easy access to munitions but also sheltered Confederate forces when they attacked Uniontown on April 12th 1861 (). This village changed its name to Huntington on January 6th 1865 due to objections from Uniontown's leaders who felt that their new name would offend people living near Fort Wayne which had been renamed Indianapolis after General Anthony Wayne while Hammondsburg turned out To be uneventful). In 1854–1855 William Hays built a sawmill here which led to heavy industry development within minutes' drive of where today's streets are laid out with mills lining each side of Main Street (). A paper mill followed suit soon afterward but succumbed within two years () due to high costs associated with new technology Revolutionary new papermaking processes then becoming common throughout much OFW industrialization – large stocks made available cheaply at Decatur & South Bend Railroad Yards caused prices for lead time delivery significant discounts (~$2 per pound against $5 or more per pound at similar facilities). By 1870 these small operations had all gone out Of business due mainly to competition from giant Western Paper Company operations started up by Ewing Sellers () underorderable quantities available without price controls (). However some smaller operators did survive into the 20th century including one still running today – Pfeiffer Paper Mills Incorporated (). Huntington is a town in Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,477 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Elkhorn–Joliet (THJ) metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Huntington Township was John Crouse in 1812. A post office was established at Huntington in 1814, and the town started to grow rapidly. In 1830, James Fenton bought 640 acres (253 ha) of land east of the White River for $5 per acre ($/ha). He named his new community after Samuel Huntington, an Englishman who had landed on American soil in 1674 and founded Hartford, Connecticut. Huntington quickly became a busy commercial center with several stores and homes being built around 1830. The original blast furnace located near the present day intersection of State Road 2 and US-31 opened in 1835 and continued to produce steel until it closed in 1922. Other early industries included lumbering and brewing; however, these are no longer major contributors to local economy today. In 1852, construction began on what would become one of the largest churches ever constructed when First Baptist Church was dedicated on May 3rd by Bishop David Laney with assistance from President Franklin D. Roosevelt Sr..
