Huntington is a town in and the county seat of Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 11,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Huntington County was made on May 10, 1812 by Peter White and James Hartsfield as a result of the Treaty of Fort Harrison which ended the War of 1812. The original name for what is now Huntington was "Pine Bluff." On December 8, 1800, while serving as U.S. Senator from Indiana Territory, Daniel Webster called for a convention to discuss boundary changes between Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and Michigan Territory (now Michigan). A meeting was held on January 7th at which it was decided that Huntington would become part of Indiana Territory; under this new designation it became a community on November 15th, 1802 with David Welsh as its first mayor. In 1834 there were only six residences in town proper when voters approved an ordinance creating two wards: one for white men and one for free black people. In 1840 several more homes were added to make up the total population of 12 residents; however during that same year an event occurred which has been considered to be one of the most significant moments in early Huntington history-the founding of Palmer's Schoolhouse by Drs Andrew Palmer and Elijah Purdy who attended Bloomington Female Seminary together; later that year also saw the opening of First Baptist Church located within present day City Park & Greene Street. On July 3rd 1870 John Waddell purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east side OF downtown Indianapolis from Caiaphas Baker Sr., founder/owner/operator/manager & builder associated with The Gilded Age Chicago Metallic company (& others), including 2 blocks NW corner Of 8th Avenue & I St., site formerly occupied by Lebanon’s Coffee House [now home to Goodtime Theatre]. This property became known as “Waddell’s Prairie” after John Waddell himself who had originally donated land for development including but not limited to: 1 block EAST OF THE CENTER OF HUNTINGTON INDIANS ON THE SIDE OF HIGHWAY 6TH AVENUE BETWEEN STATE STREET AND HIGHWAY 4TH ROAD; today Belknap Hills neighborhood within city limits east side Of Highways 66nd & 68th Streets NEAR UNIVERSITY PARK–one block WNW corner Of State Road 620 SOUTHWEST OF HIGHWAYS 66ND & 68TH Streets NEAR UNIVERSITY PARK

The name of the city comes from James Robertson's 1784 land grant to Anthony Wayne. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his military headquarters from Vandalia to Huntington after invading Missouri. The first post office in Huntington was established in 1816. It was located on the south side of Main Street near what is now the downtown area. The original building still stands and is currently used as a museum. In 1825, a group of men led by Captain John Fenton bought 1,500 acres (600 hectares) of land north of Huntington for $5 per acre (2 ha). This area became known as "Fenton's Forest". In 1830, territorial delegate George Catlett proposed that the name be changed to Huntington because it represented "the most important commerce and manufacturing center among all our territory." The new town site was surveyed and laid out by Samuel Morse in 1830-31. Huntington quickly emerged as a leading center for business and culture during its early years. Huntington was founded by the Potawatomi Tribe in 1795. The town was named for Major General George Washington, who had been born in nearby Covington, Virginia. It served as a military garrison during the Northwest Indian War and as a center of trade with the Shawnee and other tribes. In 1814, Huntington became one of the first villages in Indiana to be governed by a school board. During the Civil War, Huntington fought on behalf of the Union side and was destroyed by Confederate forces. After the war, it grew into a small town hosting a variety of businesses including an flour mill, bakery, saddlery shop and post office. The population peaked at around 30 in 1920 but then began to decline until it reached its current level of around 10 in 1960.

The loss of jobs has also led to shrinkage of housing stock and increased homelessness among low-income residents since 2001; however local officials say that they are working on developing new ways to bring businesses and jobs into the city which should solve some these problems In response to gun violence across America (the deadliest mass shooting ever committed within 500 miles of Indianapolis), Mayor Greg Ballard announced his city’s plan called “HUNTINGTON CITY 2020” which would require businesses with more than 10 employees within their walls to install metal detectors screening all workers for firearms before entry into their buildings if they wish not to be exempt from state law requiring such screenings for all employers with 25 or more employees nationally
