However, during the American Civil War (1861-1911), production of firearms slowed as gun makers turned to using arms made in Britain and France instead of America. However, after 1865 when the Union government began confiscating all weapons across America, firearm production resumed at a much higher level in Huntington thanks to importation from Europe.

Huntington is a small town located in the central part of Howard County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Huntington is named after General John Forbes Huntington who fought in the American Revolution and also served as a U.S. Senator from 1789 to 1797 and as Secretary of War from 1796 to 1800. Huntington began as a post office called Newburgh on December 12, 1825, three miles (5 km) east of present-day Indianapolis. The name was changed to Huntington on January 15, 1830; and again to Newburgh on September 30, 1835. On December 5, 1836, the post office moved from its original location to what is now downtown Huntington with a new building designed by architect Nicholas-Jacques Conte. In 1837–38 an addition was made to the west side of the old building which housed the first school in town – Kindergarten School No. 2 & 3 were built here between 1840 and 1843 by John Witherspoon Copley (1786-1856). On May 8, 1850, when Indiana became a state under US Constitution Amendments V and VI (the Second Treaty of Stroudsburg), Newburgh became one of its original seventeen counties within Howard County along with Austinburg Township on November 4 that same year together making it one of only two Indiana towns not yet organized into villages or townships according to section 10-3-1(a) of the Indiana Code until 1861 when that change followed passage by both houses of Congress authorizing counties within Indiana “to be organized into villages or townships” effective January 1 following reorganized county government structure which had been established prior to this date thereby creating Village Township #2 (later Township #6) consisting mostly populated areas lying east/northwest/southwest of present day Indianapolis including present day portion now known as North Arlington Township . Other early settlements in eastern Howard County include: Westville (named for Colonel George Washington Westvile), Eastville Terrace near modern day Middletown and Schererville . By 1860 incorporation for all but one village had occurred; however only Schererville had actually annexed land off Central Avenue main Street becoming incorporated as Village Of Schererville on October 6 1865 . Annexation for Taliaferro Heights happened later that same year becoming incorporated then too . Downtown Harper's Ferry was founded about 1840 primarily because salt mines operated there during these years but this settlement failed soon after being abandoned due to harsh weather conditions although some still live there today while Harper's Ferry Borough takes over operations currently
Huntington was founded in 1788 by Captain John Huntington. The town was named for General George Washington, who had Minorca as his home. The first post office was established in 1811, and the first bank was chartered in 1817. In 1847, the port of Huntington was created when a fortification called Fort Clark was built on the site of today's city. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln visited the town and is considered to have been its earliest resident. In 1870, Huntington became a stop on the Underground Railroad and played an important role in helping fugitive slaves escape to freedom. The city's first fire departmentwas organized in 1872.
