Huntington is a small town in the northwest corner of Indiana. It is the seat of Huntington County and has a population of 6,451 as of the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1814 by settlers from Connecticut. It became an incorporated city in 1907. The current mayor is Ron Turner and the city council has six members. The area that now includes Huntington was first inhabited by Native Americans who lived near present-day Erie and Michigan counties. The first European to visit what is now Huntington was Captain John Smith on his voyage through this region on October 26, 1638. He named it after himself, “New England’s John Smith” because he had passed through this area before his expedition led by EnglishmanSir Robin North came ashore at what is now Huntington on January 8, 1639. In 1814 Moses Jacobs established a fur trading post at Newport on Beech Creek about four miles northeast of present-day Huntington. In 1818 Isaac Capps took over from Jacobs and built a sawmill around which other businesses developed including grain storage, carriagemaking, wagonroads and later hotels and stores catering to travelers passing through the area on their way to or from Baltimore or Philadelphia (then part of Pennsylvania). The townsite where Huntington stands today was designated as part of Indiana’swest side during Northwest Territory sales conference held at Vincennes in September 1824; Indianapolis would be added to the territory one year later when New York state seceded from the Union. During its early years, Huntingtown prospered thanks to its location midway between General George Rogers Clark's new Fort Wayne garrison and easternIndiana settlements such as Lawrenceburg (now South Bend), Atchison (now Topeka), Warsaw (now Wichita) and Pateros (now Goshen). Businesses included gristmills, carriages, wagons & carts etc., while homes were built for men working in these industries along with several churches also serving local populations; among these were First Baptist Church located east of Main Street/East Market Square which served both Huntingtown residents until 1865 when it converted into a schoolhouse; Second Presbyterian Church – originally called Zion Chapel - located northwest corner Washington Street opposite 3rd Avenue School house before becoming known as First Presbyterian Church Annexe - opened December 1st 1861 after construction began adjacent First Presbyterian Church - erected October 2nd 1830 just north side 3rd Avenue School House - also served locals until 1865 when it became known as Main Street Schoolhouse annexe & ultimately became home to Howard University which moved there in 1959 . A post office called Newport existed from November 21st 1795 until March 14th 1800 when it was renamed Clintonville after Ulysses S Grant who had been secretaryof war under President James Ketchum; Clintonville would become present day Monmouth Park following territorial gains made by IU Bloomington faculty member Ebenezer Holmes during Indian War period! During American Civil War era parts east of main street became Confederate Campground while most west side residences remained Union troops barracks throughout entire conflict although some were abandoned after hostilities ceased due to lack of food or resources! In 1870s two general stores operated within town limits: A Fenton Store owned by Capt Elisha DeVault Underhill & Elijah Hawley sideline store across Third Avenue from high school – latter closed circa 1910 but items stored here still viewable online via Google Earth views );& An experienced blacksmith named William Henshaw ran Dyer Forge hammer shop & forge business adjoining Fenton Store for many years prior to its closure circa 1918 then moving all operations inside Gadsden Furniture store building attached thereto since then! Of note nearby Greencastle Arsenal late 19th centuryickr photos show large cannon fire pits visible inside Arsenal walls today . With so much going on during its early years Huntingtown gradually lost some market share to larger neighboring communities although trade did continue albeit less effectively than earlier Thanks too Mayor Ron Turner Huntington started out as an agricultural village with farmers raising hay, corn, appleseed oilseed rape crops, woolen cloth production etc.; however industry soon grew withsaw mills complex carpentry shops manufacturing nailsguns knives axes laces shoes etc.; By 1900 Huntingtown boasted 4 newspapers: "The Republican", "The Huntsville Democrat", "The Wabash Gazette" all published weekly except final week which was monthly; tobacco products extensively marketed including cigars cigarettes pipe tobacco steamboats Landing point ferry service connecting Iroquois Lake with points along Ohio River running southward thence across Ironton Reservoir connectedLake Erie finally reaching Pittsburgh Heads upriver transportation available making travel possible for people living near river especially during wet season

Huntington is a town in Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1833 by Elijah Hicks and others as an agricultural settlement named for General Andrew Johnson. It became a city in 1902. The first white person to live in Huntington was John Nicholson who arrived in 1824. In 1827, General James K. Polk made a landing here on the Wabash River and surveyed the area that would become Huntington Heights and also land east of present-day downtown when he reported back to President James K. Polk that there were no suitable sites for a new capital of the United States because of Indian resistance to settler encroachment. The site chosen for the future city of Huntington received its first attention when Elijah Hicks purchased 5 acres (2 ha) north of what is now Main Street from Abram Granger on November 3, 1833; this location served as the nucleus for what would become known as "Huntington." A year later on December 12,1834, Hicks conveyed title to his land holdings to John Ladd from Nicholas Henshawe; this transaction gave rise to what is now called "Ladd's Addition" within current downtown Huntington limits - today's block between Third and Fourth Streets - which bordered on Hendrickson Creek prior to being annexed into the city by 1898. In February 1862 Union forces burned down part of buildings used by local merchants near what is now State Street while raiding nearby homes during their raid into central Indiana preceding their planned assault upon Indianapolis; this event helped lead to severe damage done throughout most of downtown with few exceptions including several large warehouses which still stand vacant today due largely to fire prevention efforts following World War II (see below). On January 1, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order No. 1065 creating Pickering County; easternmost portion including parts of modern-day Huntington county lay within newly formed Pickering County which included much of present-day Huntington township as well as some portions of other townships located along both sides of I-465 corridor then designation Butler and Crawford counties respectively - all lands acquired by Hammonds & Co., Incorporated under order #5165 or more commonly referred to simply as "Pickering". On July 11th 1865 since much property had been lost due East Indian Resistance during those raids it was ordered that all deeds/purchases dating before November 3rd should be destroyed (see photo left); many stores and residences within center core business district existing prior thereto were destroyed or damaged during this five day rampage leading up to Andersonville prison riot two months later therein see right... just one building remaining standing today inside old downtown shopping district long past its heyday following early 21st century market crash: former Hancock Liquor store at 2ndStreet & Broadway

The first permanent settlers in what is now Huntington were pioneers named Harmon and Hinkle who arrived in 1814 from Kentucky. In 1830, James Wilkinson established the first store in what is now Huntington. By 1840 there were six stores and one hotel in town. The courthouse was built that same year. A post office was established with Homer Davenport as the first mailer on December 3, 1840. In 1846, Gideon Welles donated land to build a school district which would later become known as Welles School District #1. The city of Huntington formed when it became part of Welles School District #1 on February 26, 1847 after voters approved an ordinance creating the city limits and electing its first mayor John Crain (1830-1911). On November 15th of that year, they also designated their first street by name – Main Street. On January 1st of 1852 the new Vandalia Railroad was completed through town making it possible for people to get jobs outside of town if they needed them doing so; this made Downtown business opportunities available for those within walking distance rather than having to go into town for work or transport purposes like before which caused some businesses to close down due to competition from out-of-towners/the railroad industry itself (the current day reason given for most downtown businesses not being open anymore is because we are no longer connected by rail)! A fire destroyed many buildings downtown on October 8th of 1865; however *many* residents did rebuild and continue operation despite this tragedy! One such business that survived and continues running today is The Gilded Cage restaurant located on Main Street just past South Jefferson Avenue!
