Huntington is a city in and the county seat of Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Huntington were French Canadians who founded the village of Fort Wayne on land they had purchased from the Native American Potawatomi tribe. The town was named for General George Washington's father-in-law, James Robertson Huntington. In 1836, Indiana General Andrew Jackson appointed Robertson as Superintendent of Indian Affairs and moved the government center from Fort Wayne to Huntington. A post office was established at Huntington in 1839, and a school was opened in 1840. In 1851, one of India's largest sugar mills became an incorporated company with its own board of directors called "Indian Sugar Company" (ISC). This made it possible for white men to work hands on a large scale in what would become one of America's leading sugar beet production centers. The company employed about 1,000 people when it went public in 1862 and became known as "Indiana Sugar Company". However, by 1870 all but 10% of ISC's shares had been sold to other interests including New York investors who changed its name to "New York Mills Corporation". By 1915 all operations outside of Indiana were discontinued except for some small beet production near Newark Airport outside Philadelphia
