Huntington is a city in and the county seat of Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 56,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Huntington County was Nicholas Hough (1772-1850), who from 1802 to 1810 purchased land east of present-day Indianapolis on which he erected a log cabin known as "Hough's Fort." The town would be called "Wayne" until it became an incorporated community in 1851. In 1847, heavy rains caused flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses in downtown Indianapolis; some people moved to higher ground but most continued living in their homes until after passage of the Union Pacific Railroad through Indianapolis on December 12, 1850 led by General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War. Today much of downtown Indianapolis still stands as an abandoned section with few remnants remaining from when it was home to over one million people according to 2000 Census estimates. This event is often cited as one of the biggest floods in history. In 1951, Danville Township separated from Huntington Township and incorporation took place within days with Danville becoming an independent city with its own mayor and council members--the first such municipality west of the Mississippi River. In 1956, following a referendum initiated by Mayor Tom Ammiano Regarding annexation by nearby Danville Township—an action that residents narrowly voted against due to fears about blighting their neighborhoods—Huntington became an officially incorporated city again under Mayor Edward J. Shanahan with voting rights restricted to citizens who resided within its boundaries only while they lived or worked within its borders only

Only a few hundred properties remained in Huntington by 1880, however, testament to how successful this community had been since it was first established 100 years ago!
Huntington was founded in 1814 by James Huntington and his brother-in-law, Nicholas P. Johnson. At the time it was the most northerly town in Indiana. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the Ohio River, which provided a easy transportation link between New York City and Detroit. In 1854, Huntington became the first city in Indiana to be chartered as a result of statehood.
