It is located on both banks of the White River and near its confluence with the Ohio River. The site where Hobart now stands was first settled in 1814 by two families from Kentucky: John Denton and his wife Mary Garrett Denton, and George Washington Carver. The Carvers were later joined by other settlers, including Thomas Jeffersons family. In 1836, a post office was established in what is now Hobart; it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1837–38, General Andrew Jackson visited Hobart while he was campaigning for president and several inhabitants donated land to create a military academy called Jackson Military Academy which would train future officers for United States service during the Mexican-American War (1846–48). When President James K. Polk appointed General Philip Sheridan as military commander of all West Virginia Territory during the American Civil War (1861–65), he recommended that Hobart be put under Sheridan's command as well; this proposal was accepted by Polk and approval given by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton on April 16, 1861. However, before hostilities could begin, Governor Lucas took control of affairs and recommended to Polk that Hobart become an eastern outpost on Green river instead due to its strategic location between Unionists and Confederates forces stranded along that stretch of frontier between Missouri and Arkansas On July 4th 1865 at 2 PM local time (July 3rd EDT) after more than three years of planning involving over fifty people from twelve different states who came together to celebrate America's Bicentennial anniversary – including participants from twenty five Indian Nations present at treaty signings held at Fort Wayne – Hartsville became America's newest city when troops disembarked from USS "New Orleans" off shore to occupy it following Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House four days earlier aboard CSS "Virginia" - effective September 9th 1865 The city has been continuously occupied since then by various militaries including United States Marine Corps units stationed there through World Wars I through II; Air Force unit assigned there during Operation Desert Storm; Army unit attached thereto during Vietnam War Today there are numerous businesses headquartered here such as Hewlett-Packard Company Headquarters Phone Plant moved out in 2006 after 30 years locations in nearby Indianapolis There are also many smaller towns located within easy driving distance such as Hammondsport which had a population of just under 1,000 residents when markets closed down last year due to lack or demand for their product or services ; New Albany which had 2200 residents according to 2010 census but has seen its population increase significantly over recent years due primarily to its proximity to downtown Hartsville ; Highland Park with around 950 residents although it may experience some growth due to new development projects being announced or planned for the area - these include plans for an amusement park operated by Six Flags Over Michigan next door
