Hobart, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The surrounding rural areas are home to about 1,000 residents. The city has a rich history dating back to 1824 when it was founded as a steamboat landing on the current site of downtown Hobart by General John Curtis and his military escort Voltigeurs under Major General David Wilkinson. Other early settlers were David Beech and Solomon Block from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Jacob Wohl from Wayne County, Ohio; Job Adams from Clinton County, New York; and Levi Coffin from Kentuckiana. The first post office in Hobart was established in 1825. In 1830, the town became known as "Haviland" because of its then-large number of hogsheads (a type of wine) stored there for shipment to Baltimore or Philadelphia. In 1881–82 an International Harvester factory was built on Depot Street near what is now First National Bank (now State Street). As this factory increased production levels and traffic congestion grew throughout Vanderburgh County during that period, local officials began discussing ways to relieve the condition without increasing infrastructure costs or imposing new taxes which would have had a negative impact on businesses and citizens alike. One such plan proposed by Mayor John Kappelman called for building a bypass highway through downtown Hobart utilizing existing railroad tracks parallel to First National Bank property line in order to allow more efficient movement of goods within the community without having to navigate around blocked streets or heavy traffic congestion caused by large factories and loading docks located nearby. After much discussion and study with local representatives including members of the City Council – who were then still serving their terms – approval for this proposed bypass highway was given unanimous vote by both bodies following presentation by Kappelman at an emergency meeting held on October 12th 1980! This groundbreaking event helped kick off what would be an important growth period for not only Hobart but also nearby towns like North Vernon (the original planned location), Harperwood (originally planned as part of north central Vanderburgh County adjacent to present day White River Township), Lafayette (originally planned as southcentral Vanderburgh County adjacent to present day Bloomington), Monticello (formerly Planned as east central Vanderburgh County adjacent to present day Terre Haute), Niles ([later renamed] Plainfield) [later renamed] Decatur[], Evansville [later renamed] Fort Wayne], Peru [ later renaming[d] Warsaw], Westville [renamed] Merrillville][and finally Goshen].
