In 1884, arms manufacturer John A. Hobart and his son J.B. Hobart founded the Hobart Rifle Company in response to a request from local farmers for new guns to replace their older shotguns. The company produced rifles and shotguns until 1970, when it merged with Browning Arms & Ammunition Co. The first gun hammer was designed by J.B. Hobart in 1912 as a replacement for the shotguns' old "hammer-and-paddle" design. The new design featured a forged steel head that was held in place by a pair of adjustable iron wedges; the hammer could be depressed down to impact rounds into the breech of the gun. Hobart's hammer became known for its strength and durability, and it remained in use throughout World War II (1939-1945) and into the postwar period. In 1954, John A. Hobart died, leaving his company to his son J.B., who continued production until 1971 when it merged with Browning Arms & Ammunition Co..

Hobart is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2010 Census, Hobart has a total area of , of which (or 98.4%) is land and (or 0.6%) is water. The village lies on the west bank of the White River between Terre Haute and Evansville. The early history of Hobart can be dated back to 1795 when Frenchman François Marquette & his party set sail from Quebec for what would become known as "the Great Lakes region". They arrived in Lake Michigan on September 12th and named their new location after Pierre- Louis Hébert who had been their guide and mentor during their stay in that region. In 1812, when General Anthony Wayne laid down his military line along the White River near present day Terre Haute, he began construction of Fort Dearborn which served as a frontier outpost until it was destroyed by Ulysses S Grant in 1864 during the American Civil War. The first white settler in what became Hobart was John Stephenson who came with his family from Scotland in 1827. He died young however his wife Nannie continued farming with her three boys until 1840 when she married Peter Tappan who also built a cabin that still stands today on County Road 513 east of town center just south of Village Cemetery #2A
