Hobart, Indiana is located in Union County, Indiana. In 1836, the town was founded by Simon Kenton. It was named after John Hobart, a British general who fought in the Revolutionary War. The population of Hobart grew to around 100 people in 1841. The first store in the town was built on Main Street. The first school opened in 1840 and was named for Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Smith. In 1847, the town had a post office and three stores. By 1850, the population of Hobart had increased to over 400 people and it boasted four churches and one gristmill. In 1861, Hobart became a city and it soon developed into an important manufacturing center for local farmers and merchants. By 1870, the city had 11 businesses including two mills which produced flour, cottonseed oil & paper products; five hotels; six banks; four grocery stores; six newspapers; two veterinary clinics; two hospitals; and three sawmills. From 1870-1920, Hobart experienced rapid growth as an industrial center with major production facilities such as a foundry (1875), shoe factory (1881), shipyard (1896), chemical plant (1902), printing press (1907), bakery (1911) and candy factory (1920).

The city's main airport served as home to many major military installations such as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Dow Chemical Company plant. In recent years, however, hobART has seen decline with few new development projects announced in recent years
