Hobart, Indiana is a small city in the state of Indiana. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. The name "Hobart" comes from the English word "hoc" which means "a town." The area that now makes up Hobart was first settled by French missionaries in 1795. In 1824, the United States bought land from France and named it for George Washington, who had helped to purchase it. In 1836, Hobart was made a county seat and became part of Pontiac Township. In 1851, it became an incorporated town when all of Pontiac Township split off to form Taylor County. In 1902, HobARTtland annexed most of Defiance Township including its capital building and all but two of its businesses. On July 1st of that year, HobARTtland becomes a city under the name of HobARTtland-Defiance City Corporation with a population of 714 residents. By 1927 however, growth had outstripped what ever local government could do so on December 15th 1928 Mayor Henson issued an ordinance change annexing all unincorporated areas within 10 miles (16 km) or less to make way for new developments created by then Mayor Walthall as part of his master plan for downtown development called The Promenade which included plans for Reid Park and several department stores as well as movie theaters and other commercial buildings On September 19th 1959 citizens passed an ordinance calling for annexation into Davenport through Measure N which proposed adding 2 square miles (5 square kilometers) to each township in order to create more ramshackle housing developments sprawled across 3 townships outside Davenport limits while also serving as home base for three larger companies: American Can Company; Bechtel Corporation; Phelps Dodge Corporation On November 5th 1959 residents passed another ordinance asking for annexation into Davenport through Measure Z which proposed adding 4 square miles (10 square kilometers) to each township in order to create more ramshackle housing developments sprawled across 6 townships outside Davenport limits while also serving as home base for five larger companies: American Can Company; Bechtel Corporation; Phelps Dodge Corporation; Rockwell Automation Inc.; Standard Oil Co.; and Western Electric Company

Hobart was founded in 1835 by Captain John Steed and his wife, Mrs. Covington. The original town site was located on the east side of the river which is now part of downtown Hobart. The first settler in Hobart was James Wilkinson who built a cabin on the banks of the river. In 1840, Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson donated an acre (0.32 hectare) of land to Hobart for use as a school ground and square. That same year, Mr. Wilkinson erected a log cabin at the northeast corner of High Street and River Road for use as the town's first courthouse/ jail. In 1841, Mr. Wilkinson donated another acre (0.48 hectare) to HobART for use as a community hall/fire department station/ post office building/ounion storehouse etc., which became known as "The Square." In 1851, Captain John Steed donation another piece of land (an additional 0 acres - or 2 hectares - making up what is now downtown Hobart) to help support his growing colony; this parcel would become known as "The Commons." The first post office in Hobart opened in 1861 under the name "Hobarton Post Office." By 1865, there were over 20 businesses operating in Downtown Hobarton including: A&P grocery store, bakeries, blacksmiths...the list goes on! In 1873-74 during what is now called The Great Depression, things got pretty rough for people living in Downtown Hobarton; however due to donations from businessmen such as Wm Hite and Grover Cleveland it quickly rebuilt itself with assistance from the USA government which provided seed money for infrastructure repairs and improvements- creating what is currently known as "Downtown HBT" today! A few years later after becoming an incorporated city within Indiana state when it ratified its charter on December 15th 1902 with Mayor Fenton Thayer serving as its first mayor Contribution came from industrialist David Starr Jordan who donated $5,000 towards beautification of streetscape including installation of streetlights and planting of trees etc.. This helped spark development around City Hall that still exists today including many high end shops & restaurants along State Street & US-31!
