Highland, Indiana is located in the U.S. state of Indiana and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The population was 20,744 as of the 2010 census, making it the 8th most populous city in Indiana. Highland is bordered by Hamilton Township to the north, Posey Township to the east, LaPorte County to the south, and Carmel Township to thewest. The first permanent settler in what is now Highland was James Caldwell who arrived in 1788 with his family from Pennsylvania. He built a cabin on Rocky Hill Creek near present-day Carmel and named it Caldwell Station after his father-in-law's home in that area. In 1814 pioneer John Fenton established a small post office at what is now Highland while grazing his cattle on Bluegrass Hills Ranch across Goshen Road frompresent day Carmel. On July 1, 1816 Stonington native Elijah Howe moved his family from Clearwater Lake to Lampson Prairie about four miles southeast of present-day Carmel and founded a new town called Howe which he named after himself and two brothers - Elijah (the elder) and John - who had accompanied him there some time earlier. Howe's original settlement included twenty homes or cabins spaced around a half mile square; thirty acres of land were reserved for farming; usage evolved over time into an agricultural society where corn was grown for flour/meal production rather than cow/calf interbreeding as initially envisaged; several churches were erected including one on Harrison Street just northeast of present day High School which served as both worship center for local farmers and community meeting place until congregation disbanded c1920s; first schoolhouse was built c1820 on what today is First Avenue NE corner of Central Avenue

Highland is a city in and the county seat of Highland County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Highland was David Baird on October 10, 1814. Baird's home was located near present-day Old Highland High School and the current Depot Square building on Delaware Avenue. In 1825, John Stephenson sold his land to Jacob Fishbach for $2,000. In 1829, Brushy Creek flowed through what is now downtown Highland and parts of what are today eastern Marion County were still forested with oak trees. The first post office in this area was established in 1830 by George Wessels as "Fishbach". In 1835, John Stephenson donated land west of Delaware Avenue to the city for a public square and depot square called "Alvarado". The first street in town was named after him (David Baird Boulevard). In 1840, Samuel Haskins donated two lots east of Delaware Ave for use as a public square and depot square called "Nelson". This spot also served as the site of modern-day Statehouse Square across from First National Bank until that bank moved to Union Station in 1923. The original high school built within Highland's limits burned down on November 11th 1902 while students were attending class inside; due to this event it became known as "the high school disaster." A new high school dedicated to education within the boundaries of town was built soon afterwards (1903), but it closed its doors during World War II due to wartime bombing damage. A new high school opened its doors once again following World War II on September 1st 1949 which served as Pogue Hall until it closed in 1978 due to budget cuts caused by recessionary times; Pogue Halls successor - Northeast High School - remains open today adjacent to First National Bank building across from StatehouseSquare! In 1970, portions of Highland along with much of unincorporated Marion County were annexed into the city limits under then Mayor Joe Dietrichs administration – making Highlands' total population count up to 12% larger than when he took office! In 1997–98 a large addition/ renovation project costing over $100 million dollars resulted in significant changes being made both inside and outside Alvarado Elementary School including an indoor practice field complete with lights & technology which has been utilized by many top-tier American football teams over the years! On July 14th 2004 more than 2200 people participated in a community rally staged throughout downtown celebrating progress made since 2002 when neighborhood activists had unsuccessfully attemptedTo block construction slated for University Park Drive overlooking downtown during final Blockshoot season before they disbanded after 15 months!!!
