Highland, Indiana is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. Highland is located on the west side of the state and is bordered by Miami Township to the north, Pella to the east, Unionville to the south, and Greenfield to the west. The first European settlers in what would become Highland were French Canadians who arrived in 1778. In 1814, United States troops burned down several homes in what is now Highland after an Indian battle had taken place there that year. In 1828, when control of Hendricks County passed from France to the United States as part of a package deal during the Louisiana Purchase, land near Highland was given to John Muhlenberg and James Brown for $2 million dollars. Muhlenberg named his new community Highlands after his home state of Texas where he had lived before coming to America. In 1836 when Kentucky became a section of US states through admission into the Union as part of that state's Compromise Of 1839 between Democrats and Whigs (the Compromise being designed to keep slavery out of Kansas), much of what would later become Highland was included within Miami Township - including parts still used today by Scots-Irish immigrants who came overland from Ireland during that time period. It wasn't until 1861 when American Civil War started that things changed in Highland with residents becoming Ulysses S Grant'sveztas (natives) vs General Robert E Lee's Confederate forces which fought mainly along two main routes: The Cumberland Gap Road running through central Highlands directly towards Richmond while The Wilderness Road ran southeastward parallel to but further away from Richmond just outside present day Unionville; both roads were important supply lines for Confederate forces moving up and down South Carolina’s Eastern panhandle areas as well as heading back down towards Charlotte or points beyond during times when supplies couldn’t be brought upriver due to enemy action or blockadeade/attack elsewhere along those same rivers/lakes etc... Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest took over command & operations from General Robert E Lee in late 1862 & continued them until May 1865 when he surrendered at Appomattox Court House; this allowed American general George Meade’s army under Shermanto cross into Virginia (& eventually march thru&occupy Nashville) without having any engagement with native Indivduals whatsoever! In total about 25% or all or most of Highlands area lay within American military occupation territory prior to its final surrender... Nowadays much like many other small towns across America since WWII/ETaC there has been an increase in "gifting" by people either donating land (rental property especially) or simply giving money+time+tools away free+or inexpensively available eases boredom/urges creativity etc... such donations can come in various forms including housing developments (e.g., Crestview Village), businesses (e.g., Applebees', Lowe's', Walmart'), schools (e.g., Notre Dame High School), churches (!), car lots ('77 Plymouth Hemi Convertible I bought for $500 off Craigslist'), golf courses ('St Andrews Golf Course' open 9am-1pm Mon.-Fri.), campgrounds ('Ridgecrest RV Resort') etc... Highland is located in the southeast corner of Butler County, Indiana. It was originally called "Hancock" and was a part of the Miami Township. The first settler in Highland was James Waring, who arrived in 1824. The town was organized on February 14, 1828 by a group of settlers from other parts of Butler County. The first post office in Highland was established on June 17, 1830. The name change to Highlandville on October 1, 1835. On December 12, 1847, the post office closed due to population growth and the opening of a newpost office at Terre Haute which had been built just east of the old post office site. On January 1, 1850, Highland became a village with a police department and four stores as well as two schools. On March 6th following same year an act were passed annexing Highland to Terre Haute Township making it an official town with its own government and street system within that municipality limits. On November 15th 1861 residents voted to remove themselves from their township limits and form new unincorporated communities named after General John Fetterman (1813-1868), United States Senator from Michigan who had died in early 1861 while campaigning for reelection; Fort Harrison (now Lafayette) north of present day Terre Haute; Hendrickson south of present dayTerre Haute; Indian Wells west of present dayTerreHaute; Pilot Knob northeast of present dayterreHaute; and Wilcox Heights east sideofpresentday TerreHaute City Limits thereby creating what is now downtown Terre HaUTE
