Highland, Indiana is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population of Highland was 7,594 at the 2000 census. Highland is one of five towns in Howard County and the county seat of Howard County. The history of Highland goes back to 1812 when it was founded as a fur-trading post on the banks of the Little White River by James Robertson and his brother Alexander. In 1827, John Wertz bought from Robertson land that now includes most of what is today Highland. On March 3, 1860, however, citizens voted unanimously to incorporate as a city under the new constitution which created local government separate from township government.. The first mayor and Aldermen were James Sutherforth and George Ladd respectively; they held office until 1865 when Wm Huddleston became mayor and Aldermen after that time until 1907 when he died suddenly aged only 44 years old after serving three terms total!
