In 1802, William Henry Harrison was elected president of America and his term included presiding over Indian Removal proceedings from Kentucky to what is now Michigan Territory. On July 8, 1810, General Wayne arrived at Fort Wayne with 1,500 soldiers to begin what would be one of history's largest campaigns against Native American resistance. He called out 3 miles (5 km) of his men on high ground overlooking downtown Highland and ordered them to open fire on any Indians who emerged from their homes – an event that has been immortalized as the Battle Of Highland Hill. Under General Wayne's command, more than 200 men were killed or wounded during this bloody conflict; today only fragments remain aboveground and are protected by state safety regulations as historical landmarks within the boundaries of Terre Haute/Henry County Schools District No 2- Highlandersburg Elementary School & Historic Site

In 1814, during the Mexican-American War, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army burned down what is now the John Marshall High School in order to seize arms and ammunition from Mexico. Highland was founded as a post office on December 12, 1836, by Joel Patterson. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, potatoes and other crops near the current town site. By 1840, the population of Highland had grown to about 100 residents. In 1860, Highland became part of the newly formed Hoosier state after it was split off from Indiana Territory. During its time as a county seat of Jasper County (now Warren County), Highland experienced some significant growth and development including the construction of several large public buildings such as court house and jail. In 1907, when Jasper County merged with Warren County to form Lawrence County, Highland declined to merge with the new county because it felt that its economy would be better served by staying within its own borders. After years of lobbying by business owners in nearby Gary and Terre Haute (both located in neighboring Indianapolis), Highlands finally joined Lawrence County on January 1st, 1912. The merger brought many changes for Highlands including an increase in population to over 500 residents; the opening of several businesses including grocery stores; the construction of several roads; and most importantly,the establishment of a high school which would serve as an important steppingstone for future generations into local government service.
The Highland community in Indiana was founded in 1856 by Scots-Irish immigrants. The town soon grew to become a major center for trade and commerce in the area. In 1870, Highland became the first small town in Indiana to be chartered as an incorporated municipality. The town's growth continued through the 1800s and into the decades following, thanks to its strong economy and popular culture. In 1925, Highland was renamed after General George Custer, who had died in battle that year.
