Highland, Indiana was founded in 1814 by General Anthony Wayne as an agricultural community on the east bank of the White River. The area became a center of fur trade and industry, with mills and towns built along the river. Highland is located in the eastern portion of what is now central Indiana. The town's name comes from the highlands to which it was situated, Roosevelt Hill being one of the highest points in the area. The first settler in Highland was Levi Coffin, who arrived in 1814. In 1819, John Drennan also moved to Highland and began operating a tannery. In 1830, Scotsman James Watt set up his sawmill at present-day Buffalo Creek on Buffalo Lake; this mill continued production until 1865 when it burned down. In 1834, David Meadows opened a gristmill on White River Boulevard near present-day Monument Road; this mill continued production until 1922. Another early producer of flour was Ebenezer Sibley & Sons (1838-1920), which operated a bakery at 5th Street and Wabash Avenue from 1841 to 1870. Hennepin County's first post office was established in Highland on July 1, 1840; it closed after 2 years due to financial difficulties caused by runaway mail carriers entering rural areas unannounced during that time period. One major ironworker associated with Highland during its early days was Abram Hewitt (1815-1900). Hewitt came to America from Scotland around 1835 and worked for Andrew Carnegie before moving westward into Illinois where he started his own company manufacturing cast iron products; he eventually sold his business to American Iron Works Company in 1903. One other significant figure associated with early Highlands development is Major John Fenton (1797-1870), who served as military captain under US General Winfield Scott during Indian Wars fought between 1794 and 1800 including Battle of Fallen Timbers near present day Indianapolis. 1
