Highland, Indiana is a small town located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 711 at the 2010 census, which makes it the smallest town in Marion County by population. Highland is part of the Bloomington–Normal metropolitan area and is considered to be one of the most affluent towns in Indiana. The first settler in what is now Highland was John Swartzwelder, who arrived with his family in 1814. In 1825, Henry Coyle settled on a tract of land that would become Highland. A post office called "Hughston" was established in 1826, and remained open until its closure in 1902. In 1830, Elijah McCoy settled on a piece of land that would later become Highland. He built a log cabin and named it "McCoy's Cabin." In 1863, Isaac Myers bought McCoy's Cabin from Isaac Myers and moved into it with his family. They operated it as an inn until 1870 when they sold it to James Ewing for $2 per acre. Ewing added an addition to the cabin and named it "Ewing's Hotel." It became a hotel until 1923 when it closed due to lack of business; however, portions remain extant today as two mobile homes were used as housing for employees during renovation projects undertaken by Highlands Township trustees during 2001-2002 (see below). In 1893, Wm Henson opened a store at 9th Street and High School Avenue; this store served as the nucleus around which commercial development took place throughout much of Highlanders history up through 2003 when Highlands Township electricIFIED everything within its borders save for downtown Bloomington Center where all services are provided by Dixon Electric Cooperative (Dixon Electric Co.) In 1903-04 when Wm Henson passed away his son Wilbur Jethro Henson took over running shop while mother continued operations outfitted with new equipment including an 8 inch turntable which she played records off from her home or even outdoors on long summer evenings During prohibition era many businesses such as grocery stores catered to speakeasy customers I recall one night I went into my local grocery store after work and saw 2 guys inside trying to get some booze so I let them come up without getting busted since then I've learned my lesson about not giving out personal information like that

Highland is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Highland has been inhabited by humans since at least the time of the Paleo-Indians. The first settler in Highland was James Robertson, who arrived in 1825. A post office was established in 1828, and Highland became a village on April 12, 1830. In 1838, Scott and Company bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land from David Wickersham for $5 per acre ($2 million today). They named their new settlement Highland after Scottish highlands where they had been born and raised. The first school was organized in 1840 with 10 students. There were no roads or water supplies until the late 19th century when a canal was built to bring water to the town from Big Spring Lake near present day Scottsville. By 1870, there were 100 residents living in Highland and 14 schools were operating including two high schools which became known as “The Old Highlanders” because they were used by students from Scottsville and other nearby towns during this time period In 1865, J C Halliday began farming about one mile northeast of present day Highland on land that he acquired from his father-in-law John Hargrave for $4 per acre ($1 million today). On November 25, 1871, Halliday donated 2 miles (3 km) of what would become current I-465 to the town of Terre Haute as part of a benefit effort in support of local businesses following an economic slump caused by railroad construction across central Indiana In 1916–17 due to World War I efforts to keep production up at plants across central Indiana throughout much of America industrial production came to a standstill as many companies closed their doors including those located within reach of Highlandtown such as J C Halliday’s grocery store which ceased operations on October 15 1917 because it could not compete with prices set by suppliers outside central Indiana . This event left approximately 4500 men unemployed statewide and many families struggling through tough times On December 6 1917 Mrs Hargrave handed over her entire grocery business including all its inventory (>2000 items) including 2400 cases (~10% total retail sales) operated out of her home at 5777 N State Road 458 for same price received 2 years earlier when she sold it also for $4 to Mr Halliday . In 1919 when General Motors moved their factory from Fort Wayne into downtown Terre Haute General Motors applied for an injunction against Mrs Hargrete ordering her not open any stores . Upon hearing this order Mrs Hargrave closed all but 4 out her 17 stores (9 self serve only) within days setting off what would become known as “The Great GM Shutdown” lasting until May 1923 As early as 1861 James Robertson had started planting potatoes near what is now called "Old Highlanders" Elementary School which served grades K-6 until 1918 when it burned down due to weather conditions while being used by both classes and staff members playing broomball
