In 1854, a man by the name of John Ritchie erected a building known as The Lamp both in Highland and Doniphan. Mr. Ritchie used a small fire to produce artificial light from an attached mirror which he placed on an armoire in his home. In 1876, Mrs. Mabel Harkness opened her business called The Camera Shop at 312-314 Main Street in Highland. Mrs Harkness was responsible for selling various types of cameras including negative and positive films, eyeglasses, and other optical equipment such as telescopes and binoculars. In 1907, she sold her business to Bessie Senter who operated it until 1942 when it became the Melody Store Incorporated.. After World War II, Optics America Corporation acquired Ms Senter's business and continued operations until they merged with JB Hi-Fi in 1984. The first commercially available electronic camera was developed by American inventor Robert Fleming Jr., working with American Electric Power Company (AEP) during World War I; Fleming's device photographed images using diodes instead of film pathfinders found on battlefields at that time

Highland, Indiana is a small city in the state of Indiana. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Highland is located on the eastern edge of Hoosier Hills and is bordered to the north by Uniontown and to the east by Carmel Township. Highland was founded in 1827 as a place for farmers to sell their produce. The city was named after Sir John Ayrton, 1st Baronet, who donated land for its establishment. It became an industrial center in the early 20th century due to its location at a crossroads between two rail lines and its abundance of resources such as limestone, coal, oil shale and iron ore. In addition to its manufacturing base, Highland also enjoyed a sizeable agricultural sector until recently; today much of Highland's economy revolves around services such as health care and education. The historical downtown district has been restored and now offers tours of buildings dating back to 1827 including The Old State House which served as both a courthouse and jail from 1837-1845 before being moved into its current setting in 1916. Other attractions include Pogue Well (opened in 1907), Tomlinson Park (named for one of Highland's first mayors), Pioneer Cemetery (founded in 1865),and Roberts Tavern which served as headquarters for several local businesses during prohibition days in 1920s & 30s

Highland is a small town in Wayne County, Indiana, United States. Highland was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1818. The population was 775 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The Township of Highland was organized in 1819 and named for the highlanders who had settled there many years before. The first post office was established in 1824, and the first store was built in 1830. The township seat until it moved to Vanderburgh in 1853. In 1863, Highland became a part of the newly formed Wayne County when it was created from parts of Posey and Hendricks counties. In 1870, Indianola (now Terre Haute) became the new capital of Indiana after Fort Dearborn was burned down by General Anthony Wayne's army during the American Civil War. In that year, Highland also gained its own government with John Denton as its first mayor, and James Braidwood as its first treasurer. By 1880, however, Highland's economy had changed so much that it no longer served as a county seat; it reverted to Vanderburgh until 1904 when it again became an independent municipality under statehood rules Highland has been very active politically since its incorporation into Wayne County; two mayors have served three terms each (John Denton (1890-94), James Braidwood (1904-10), Everett Hamlin (2010-2018). As such, local elections are typically one of the most important events held in Highland during any given year because they choose members of county government which then set policies for all residents including school funding, zoning regulations etc...
