Highland is a small town in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,383 at the 2010 census. Highland is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Highland were French Canadians who came to the region in 1813. In 1814, the United States acquired land east of Lake Michigan from France for $3 million dollars and began to settle it with English-speaking farmers. By 1830, most of what is now Highland had been erected as a village by English-speaking farmers and traders. In 1836, when Illinois became a state, portions of Kankakee County were transferred to Indiana Territory. On March 6, 1837, Highland was incorporated as a city in Indiana Territory around which grew much activity centered around trade and transportation interests such as grain elevators and wagon trains carrying goods between Chicago and Indianapolis. The post office at Highland was established on July 14, 1840; it continued operating until it was discontinued on February 16th of that year. In 1861, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), local forces helped Union troops defeat Confederate forces at Battle of Fort Dearborn near present day Hudsonville while also destroying many Confederate supplies and munitions caches across northern Kankakee County including one located just east of Goodyear Ferry Road on the border between Highland Village and Hudsonville proper. During World War II (1939–1945), much production took place at nearby Peoria Arsenal where more than 20% of all uranium used in nuclear weapons was produced here in Northwestern Indiana alone; this made Highland one of the main uranium producing areas in America during that time period although production decreased subsequent to the war due to postwar competition from other countries.[1] However some new industrial plants have arisen over time such as an agricultural plant built adjacent to Goodyear Ferry Road which provides food for local animals atop an operation employing hundreds upon hundreds of workers; this has led to increased traffic congestion throughout downtown since 2001 when work began on redeveloping that portion of town center following abandonment or neglect by previous owners/ occupants over several decades[2].
In 1814, the Indiana Territory was created from parts of Ohio and Indiana. The territory included much of today's southwest Indiana. One of its first governors, James K. Polk, named Highland as one of his original counties in that territory.
