In 1914, when World War I beganWWI had just ended but tensions were high between Great Britain and America following the October Crisis when Britain banned U.S.-produced munitions exports because they were believed to be helping Germany win the war against Austria-Hungary This led to an arms race between America and Great Britain with each side investing heavily into armaments development culminating in World War I which started on April 6th 1916 with America entering into WWI on Serbia’s behalf after American president Wilson declared war on Germany despite British Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s protests . Americans fought alongside British troops throughout WWI including Highlander Lt Col Edwin “Buzzy” Wright who became world famous for being one of only two Americans killed during WWI while fighting for England (the other being Private William Treadaway). After World War I ended there was a large demand for resumed metals production especially aluminum output resulting in Highland setting up its own aluminum smelter which continued operations until it closed down in 1980 due to environmental concerns about environmental impact fromProduction at this plant caused significant land use changes within Highland reducing agricultural yields which continue through present day as a result of Aluminum production while also degrading groundwater quality across much of Butler County
