Highland, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Highland is on the eastern edge of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is bordered by Posey County to the north and west, Marion County to the east, and Hendricks County to the south. The name "Highland" was first given to this region in 1814 when General David Hunter visited this area and found high hills which he called "the Highlands." This appellation has been retained by local settlers ever since. In 1828, Highland residents voted to become a village under Hamilton Township law but it did not take hold because there were only about eighty residents in that township at that time. In 1836, a group of men from Terre Haute formed a committee to look for land in what is now Highland. They found three tracts of land totaling forty acres (16 hectares) and became known as pioneers of this community which they named Terre Haute after their home town (now Des Moines). In 1840, two brothers-in-law bought one hundred fifty acres (31 hectares) of land from Nicholas Snyder for $5 per acre ($10 per hectare). This piece of property later became known as Prairie View Farm where many famous American farmers had their homes during those years including John Deere, George Stephenson, Andrew Johnson and others. The farmhouse still stands today next to Interstate 65 near Michigan Avenue in downtown Terre Haute; it has been restored as an museum with exhibits on early farming practices as well as modern day technology used on that farm during those days! This was also whenTerreHaute accepted its nickname "The Town That Was". The town quickly grew with new businesses opening up along I-65 such as J&J's Bakery & Cafe opened in 1951 followed by Lowe's Hardware chain store opened in 1957 followed by Ford dealership openings in 1961 and 1966 respectively! These businesses helped bring much needed jobs into our community which continues to be so important today! In 1972, Highland voters passed a resolution calling for independence from Hamilton Township which came about due to budget cuts made by then Mayor Tom Hickson who wanted more control over our lifeblood - our schools! After much discussion among all involvediety within our community we finally decided that we would remain within our current township limits until further notice! We are grateful for all thathas happened since then including more than ten thousand new residents who have moved into this beautiful community over the last few decades!

In 1915 the population of Highland was 914 and it shrunk to 593 when it amalgamated with other nearby townships. In 2000 the population of Highland was 671. The town is located about 14 miles west of Indianapolis on I-65 just east of US-6 exit 12B. The total area of the town is about 2 square miles. There are no businesses in or around Highlands but there are several farmers' markets, a library, two churches, and one grocery store which serve the townspeople.
