In 1865, Gunsight Co., founded by Captain Samuel Coltman in Hartford City (now Elkhart), Connecticut began making gun sights for pistols and revolvers using only ironwood screws rather than nails because nails would rust under repeated exposure to moisture and air. Gunsight products quickly became popular due to their accuracy and reliability. It was not until 1902 that Coltman invented what is now known as the prone position shooting position for handguns- thisposition allowed shooters to rest their hands horizontally on either side of the magazine well while keeping their eyes level with the bore axis
