The first settler in Highland was James Garland, who arrived there in 1824 and built a cabin on Big Creek near what is now Fourth Street. The first post office was established in 1827, and the first store was opened in 1830 by John Haines. A school was established in 1830 and became a high school in 1881; it closed in 2009 but reopened as Highlands Community High School under new management earlier this year. In 1836, Elijah Dixon moved to Highland from Lafayette and began farming land that he had bought from David Thompson two years earlier. Dixon named his farm "Highland" after his birthplace, Highlandershire, Scotland. In 1840, John Witherspoon founded Witherspoon & Company grocery store on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets with twenty-four barrels of Indian corn oil per acre (equivalent to $2 per barrel at that time). That same year also saw the opening of first clothing store (Fowler’s Store) on Third Street east of current Seventh Ave., which served as an early commercial center for Highland residents; it closed around 1954 due to competition from larger stores like Sears Roebuck and JCPenney. In 1847, pioneer George Stephenson donated land to build a road through Highland which would later become I-65; it entered service November 15th, 1956 as one of America's initial Interstate highways In 1865 when Congress created Knox County based on present-day Kane County they gave old Duncan Township adjoining Highland its name – “Highlands” still remains today as one important street segment within Knox County limits north west of downtown Indianapolis including portions bordering Ontario City In 1870 when General Sherman's army burned down Ft Harrison west of Indianapolis during his winter campaign against the Indians following their victory over Union forces at Battle Of Fort Harrison some local residents took up arms against Sherman's orders burning all supplies connected with white settlers within sight especially grain Elevator etc…..one such individual may have been Elijah Dixon himself who along with ten other men burned down said Elevator either while inside or shortly afterward outside where today you can find what once were contiguous building blocks making up what used to be known as “Dixon’s Addition” now just remnant fields leading off Old National Road running parallel to 4th St NE across fromPresent day US military facility known as Truman National Military Park

In 1806, two brothers by the name of DeWitt and David Hildebrandt purchased land east of present day Highland on Indian Land #4 from Chief Tecumseh for $2 per acre. They began to build a town called Deer Creek (later changed to Highland) which included threesquare blocks with streets running north-south and east-west, two churches, four stores and thirty residences. At this time it appeared that there would be no problem building an additional square block because all other settlers had done so before them but it soon became apparent that deer creek would not accommodate everyone so DeWitt & Hildebrandt decided to subdivide their land into parcels equal in size which eventually led to the formation of neighborhoods today including Northwest Side (northwest corner), East Side (east corner), Southwest Side (southwest corner), North Side (northwest corner) and West Side ( southeast corner). The City Beautiful Movement took hold throughout America during the late 19th century as people realized how beautiful towns could be if properly designed with wide sidewalks, well-lit squares downtowns and efficient street grid systems while also being accessible by car or streetcar making Highlands an attractive place to live for both residents and visitors alike. In 1897 when Indianapolis authorized annexation by Chicago due to its booming economy, DeWitt & Hildebrandt responded enthusiastically by submitting plans for what would become known as "Highland Park" - a series of large blocks bounded by State Road 810E/Interstate 94 south/east from downtown Indianapolis on the west side through Deer Creek Boulevard/Northeast Expressway onto Indian Land #4 northward whereupon property lines were drawn between adjacent neighborhoods creating today's grid system with NW Corner Street running along Deer Creek Boulevard/Northeast Expressway; EW Corner Street running along Indian Land #4 northerly paralleling Interstate 94; SW Corner Street running along Deer Creek Boulevard/Southwestern Expressway; NE Corner Streetrunning parallel Interstate 94 becoming Frontier Avenue later renamed after then Mayor George Wickersham

Highland, Indiana was first settled in the mid-19th century. The community was originally called Highland Station, and it was located on the banks of the river Pee Dee. In 1838, a post office was established in Highland, and it remained in operation until 1907. In 1870, a sawmill and gristmill were built in Highland, and they continued to be active until the early 20th century. In 1902, a large tract of land around Highland was purchased by J.P. Morgan for $5 million dollars. He intended to use the land for agricultural purposes, but he never developed it further. In 1919, a new high school was built in Highland by local businessmen Milt Hinson and Harry Wirthman. It remains one of the most popular schools in the area today.
