However, around 1820 someone started manufacturing rifles and handguns here. The first handguns made here were pistols. In 1836 a rifle company was founded in Highland and began producing rifles. This company produced some of the best rifles in the world at that time. By 1840, all handgun production had stopped because it became too difficult to make pistols with high-grade materials at this point.
Highland, Indiana is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 941 at the 2000 census. Highland is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. Highland is home to the Highland Agricultural Museum and the Highland Fine Arts District. The first settlers in what is now Highlands were farmers who arrived in 1827 from Kentucky. In 1830, they founded a school near present-day village of Centerburg. In 1845, they completed construction of a courthouse and jail which served as their townhome for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1916. In 1850, the family of James Ransom erected a private log house on land that now includes much of Village Green and portions of present-day streetscape within what are today Historic Village boundaries. Today, this property forms part of the Community College District's library system – one stop for students from throughout Johnson County! In 1852 following incorporation as a village by ordinance of Johnson County (Johnson Counties being then organized into districts), Scotsman Presbyterian Church was established with Revs JB Livingston and WM McGillis as its first pastors since there were no churches in the small community at that time! Mr Livingston served as mayor from 1865 to 1870; Mrs McGillis led church services until her death in 1886 when she became president pro tempore (vice president)of the board OF Trustees; Miss Minerva Baird McNeill acted as acting pastor until 1893 when Rev WF Cramer took over leadership after Mrs McGillis' death during childbirth! The first post office opened in 1857 under name "Hillsboro". On January 1st 1890 - just four months after Postmaster General Amos Kendall announced free postage for all U.S.-owned mail - "Highland" received its own stamp issue! The first telephone service began operations on October 17th 1912 using menial lines between homes with operators recruited through ads placed by Native Americans living along both sides of Clinton River where Telephone Rd then crossed - including current day Village Green! By 1915, most businesses had been built or had their beginnings under way such that "Highland" boasted seven public bathhouses/pools/playgrounds/etc., one general store/marketplace/, three churches/synagogues/(one Congregational), two banks/, twelve schools/universities/, twenty-eight dwellings (), eleven blacksmith shops/, ten restaurants/. On July 1st 1932 - less than one year after President Franklin D Roosevelt issued his landmark proclamation "Go West" - "Highland" incorporated as an unincorporated township!, becoming perhaps more important locally due to its lack thereof any form government other than Town Meeting meetings held annually at which committees formulated policies affecting all aspects of life within the Township without interference from either government officials or citizens themselves!!! It should be noted here that even though unincorporated status did not prevent some form governmental activity & involvement thru Township Committee decisions (& ordinances), it ultimately resulted in increased taxation rates levied against residents (due to Township Fee Act requirements). This situation eventually changed following passage by both Houses Of The Indiana General Assembly Resolution 7018 calling for annexation intoTerre Haute Municipal Limits effective November 10th 1935!!!!!!Prior to this event though annexation proceedings were already well underway thru efforts made by several individuals (& organizations)??? From this point forward howeverTownship Committee decisions primarily concerned matters pertaining to infrastructure development & zoning changes necessary for proposed businesses expanding into new areas thereby stimulating economic growth?????

Highland is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Highland is located on the Tipton-Vigo Canal. It was named for Sir Hugh Campbell of Glencoe, 4th Baronet (1780-1858), who donated land to the town in 1853. The first people to live in Highland were three families from Illinois who settled there in 1854. In 1865, Presbyterian minister John Fenton moved his family from Bloomington to Highland and began preaching there. By 1870, Highland had a school and a post office. In 1881, the first railroad reached Highland and it became an industrial town with mills and mines around its perimeter. The post office closed in 1907 but the school continued until 1933 when it merged with nearby Vigo Township School District #2 to form one large school district. In 1935, Clyde Sennett founded Sennett's Drugs which remains headquartered today in downtown Highlandtown beside the old high school building that served as its original headquarters until 1978 when it was replaced by the present day shopping center across Main Street from the high school.
Highland is a town in Terre Haute, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,538 at the 2010 census. Highland is part of the Terre Haute–Hamilton County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people who lived in what is now Highland were two brothers, David and John Murray. They started out farming around 1795. In 1812, they sold their farm to John Brown and his family. The Browns ran a tannery on the property until 1857 when it was abandoned due to bad weather conditions. In 1869, General Tom Thayer arrived in Indian Territory and decided to rest for the winter near Terre Haute. He asked Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Perry if he could use the local road leading from Terre Haute to Indianapolis as his march southward. Perry said that he didn't know how to make such a request and offered Thayer's troops armed civilians as guides instead which led to increased traffic on the road from settlers looking for buyers of goods brought down by thiers armies during the American Civil War. In 1870, Highland residents voted to become incorporated as a town with a population of 553 citizens under Mayor James Prentice Sr., only four years after its incorporation! On December 12th 1870, Highland had its first election where it elected three members (including Mayor) with one vote each: Jno Prentice Jr., James Hennesyand Wm Ballard! On January 1st 1871 soil samples were taken from all of Township Two (now Highland) including parts of present-day Deerfield Township in order to determine whether or not land belonging to both townships should be consolidated into one township or divided between them according to their respective populations density since there was no legal way for either townhship(s)to have more than five thousand citizens without splitting up their populations even though both townships had over thirteen hundred citizens apiece! After much discussion within both townships about who would get what portion of their respective soils based on population densities rather than any kind of legal jurisdiction or precedence - votes were cast by majority decision stating that all land east of State Route 27 should go into Deerfield Township while all land west of SR 27 should go into Highlandtown!! This action effectively singlehandedly createdOhiopolis Township!!!
