The community was named after Sir John Aird, 4th Baronet of Glencairn and Highlanders who landed in what is now Highland in 1765 as part of an effort to settle land that had been claimed by several British families. In 1827, James Waddell founded the first post office in Highland, which served residents of nearby Indianapolis and other towns until it closed its doors in 1873. Many early settlers were Scots-Irish Presbyterians from Glasgow and Ulster who had moved to northcentral Indiana during the early 1800s in efforts to escape religious persecution back home. The Community Church (later Highland Baptist Church) was built on a tract of land near present-day State Road 523 and Hwy 636 east of town center in 1922. It became one ofIndiana's first churches with services beginning on October 10 that year. In 1951, it was renamed Highland Presbyterian Church - still serving today as one of Highlands' most popular worship options for locals and visitors alike! Highland, Indiana is a town in Dearborn County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,839 at the 2010 census. Highland is located on the southern edge of Dearborn County and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settler in Highland was John Robertson who arrived in 1814. In 1816, James Caldwell settled here and built his home "Caldwell's Ford". The first school in Highland was established in June 1827 by Mr. Caldwell and Mrs. Caldwell with fifteen students under the guidance of Rev. Denton USMILITARY HISTORY OF ILLINOIS 7:322-323 (1885). In 1831, David Silliman arrived from Kentucky and platted what is now Highland on land he had bought from John Robertson for $2 per acre.[1] He named it after his father Hugh Silliman who had come to this country about 1830 as one of the original settlers of Michigan Territory. In 1840, Elijah Latimer moved to Highland from Boston and set up a flour mill which became known as "Latimer's Mill". For many years this mill produced bread that was sold throughout central Indiana and also distributed to other localities including Terre Haute and Lafayette in Illinois. In 1865–66 it also produced flour for Napoleon Bonaparte's army during the French Revolutionary Wars when demand for war supplies increased because of news reports of Napoleon's military successes across Europe. After Elijah Latimer's death, his daughter Sarah took over running the mill until her husband Daniel Latimer took over operations in 1906 when he died aged 83 years old; Daniel Latimer was succeeded by his sons George Latimer Jr., Lewis Latimer Sr., & Angus Latimer IV who ran the mill until its closure in 1951 . In 1850, William Haines came to Highlands from Spencer Township near Terre Haute with his family; they erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street which served as their home until 1913 when they moved into an enlarged frame house on present day Elm Street which still stands today. William Haines raised corn here until 1863 when he removed it to modern-day Stroudsburg where he began growing soybeans .[2] The first grocery store opened up shop on High Road behind Present Day grain elevator #5 around 1880 by Wm Glidden & Son Incorporated (later Piggly Wiggly)store proprietor Ephraim Glidden (1811-1894).[3] This store operated continuously through 1955 before being closed due to economic conditions following World War II .[4][5][6] It should be noted that not all settlements were founded by farmers - some were started by developers such as A&P Grocery Store Owner Hiram Cobb Addison (1850-1924)who laid out much of Dearborn County north of Terre Haute prior to 1915 when he developed what are now parts of Indianapolis including portions east of I-465 etc.. One such development occurred near present day University Circle just south of State Fairgrounds where developer Samuel Inslee built Inslee’s Corners subdivision which included a large grocery store/ Corner Drugstore/ Bank
