Highland, Indiana is a small town located in the Susquehanna River Valley of southern Indiana. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. Highland is part of the Johnson County metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Highlands were farmers who arrived in 1812. The community was founded by James McGill and others during the early 1800s when land sales were restricted to men over 25 years old and they could not own slaves. In 1892, Dr. John Fenton purchased 1,000 acres of land east of Highland from a group led by Wm Hockaday. He named his tract Highland after Scottish highlands where he had been born and raised. By 1912, there were only a few hundred residents living in Highland although it remained an agricultural community for many years because of its fertile soil and strategic location on the Susquehanna River Valley between Ligonier and Harrisburg counties. In recent decades, Highland has experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for Johnson County with its growing population, shopping centers, and new businesses opening up throughout the year. In fact, this growing municipality currently ranks #1 among all Johnson County municipalities in terms of job creation rate according to Ontario Business Journal’s “Municipality Rankings 2017” report! Highland is home to several historic buildings that are open to visitors such as The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) clubhouse which dates back to 1894; The Presbyterian Church built in 1905; The Schoolhouse Museum which features original school desks from 1922; as well as other interesting artifacts such as Auld Lang Syne balls that date back to 1929!

Highland, Indiana is a small town located in the southern portion of Indiana. The population was 3,859 as of the 2010 census. Highland is one of the oldest communities in central Indiana and has been settled since 1824. The first settlers to Highland were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1824. They founded what is now called Highland Academy which opened its doors to students in 1828. The village began to grow around this time with construction on a post office, school, and other buildings taking place. In 1868, Highland became part of the newly created Tipton County and saw further growth with several new businesses opening up including a movie theater and grocery store. In 1949, Highland separated from Tipton County and formed its own government becoming an independent township within Central Indiana Municipal Corporation under the direction of a Mayor/Council system. This form of government continued until 1973 when it was replaced by a Mayor/Council system once again under the guidance of an elected Mayor/Council system which currently exists today. Today, Highlands sees strong economic development with several new businesses opening up such as Applebee's restaurant, Lowe's Home Improvement Store, Macy's department store (now Nordstrom), and more recently Pateken's restaurant which opened up in 2017 just east of downtown on State Road 20-22A.
