Highland, Indiana was a small village in southwestern Indiana when the area was first settled by Europeans in the 18th century. The name "Highland" is derived from the Scottish Highlands, which are located inverness-wise on the border of Scotland and England. The community's early settlers were Presbyterian Scots who came to what is now Highland in 1772. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of several trails that led to new settlements in what is now Illinois and Kentucky. By 1800, Highland had a population of about 100 people. In 1802, a post office wasestablished here, and within a few years it had become an important transportation hub for goods coming into and going out of America. In 1826, Highland became part of what is now Hendricks County. At this time, it was one of the larger villages in Hendricks County because it consisted mostly of agricultural land with few buildings or other permanent structures. But over time, as more businesses opened up and more people moved into Highland, the village began to grow significantly both physically and economically. By 1840, it had reached its current size with over 1,500 residents. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Highland experienced some significant growth due to new industrialization along nearby rivers like the Muhlenberg River and Miami River. This growth led to increased demand for housing units and other amenities such as schools and churches; however, it also created some problems such as traffic congestion on busy roadways or lack thereof on quiet rural streets where homes stood alone among trees; these issues continued until relatively recently when newer development has resumed around town center areas or along major thoroughfares like State Road 3A (the old main street).
