A revolutionary new cartridge design, called "Paterson's Rifle Shot", was introduced in 1847 by John Paterson. Highland, Indiana is a small city in the heart of the Hoosier state. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Indiana by population. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Indiana. The first settlers to Highland were Presbyterians who arrived from North Carolina in 1812. They built a small log cabin near what is now downtown Highland. The original town was named after Lord Highwood, an English gentleman who became governor of India. The first post office was established in 1814 and operated for six years before being moved to Noblesville. In 1828, the land around present-day downtown Highland was granted to James Hartsfield and his family as part of their land grant from President Andrew Johnson. Mr. Hartsfield started a farmers’ market on State Street which continued until 1906 when it relocated to its current location on First Street downtown. The city's history can be traced back to1836 when General George Armstrong Custer reported that he had discovered gold along the banks of the White River east of Fort Wayne while campaigning against Mexican forces under Santa Anna. This led to increased settlement throughout eastern Indiana and much of Illinois by Anglo-American pioneers looking for new opportunities and riches beyond their farms and villages back home. Many Scots-Irish immigrants also migrated during this time period; some settling in what is now northeast Indianapolis (known as "the Hill District"). In 1840, John Ritchie founded a pottery business next door to where First Presbyterian Church now stands on Washington Street in downtown Highland . His potters created many popular items such as jugs, pitchers and teapots which are still used today

What is Highland, Indiana? Highland is a town in central Addison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1848 and named for Colonel John Highland of Kentucky. The first store in Highland was on the corner of Third and Elm Streets. In 1857, the first post office opened in Highland and it continued to be operational until it closed in 1959. The first school district in Addison County was organized in 1852 and Highland School District No. 1 was formed out of it in 1854. In 1865, Highland School District No. 2 merged into it; however, the merger did not take place until 1961 because of objections from other communities that had been established since then as part of Addison County districts #1-4 (the rural areas north of Indianapolis). In 2002, Highlands became one of four townships within Addison County which were consolidated with neighboring cities of Fishers into the new city of Fishers; however, no change occurred to its name or municipal status. In 2008, when Addison County became one unitary authority under the government structure known as "Indiana's First State", portions (including Highlands) within City Township were transferred to Village Township while remainder remained within Town Township; as such village status has not been granted by either government agency yet. On December 17th 2009 there will be an election to determine if Highlands will become a village or continue being part of Town Township under state law pending clarification from both governments entities about what would happen next with regards to future development/village status for Highlands residents once unification occurs
Highland, Indiana was founded in 1805 and has been a part of the United States since 1790. The community is located in Daviess County, Kentucky, about 25 miles northwest of Lexington. It is the smallest town in Kentucky and home to only about 1,200 people.
