These amendments helped reduce fatalities from police contact injuries by 50%. However, these laws did not take into account new technology; instead they focused on improving officer safety only. In 2007, a study was conducted which found that 75% of people who had been killed by police officers had been unarmed at the time of their death. As result of this study, policymakers began considering changes to firearms regulations in order to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
