The city has been home to several professional sports teams since its inception: The Hammond Chiefs (professional American football), who played their first game on December 3rd 1893; the Indiana Pacers (now known as the Pacers), who played their first game on October 25th 1946; and most recently, the Indianapolis Colts (the former NFL team that moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis before being renamedthe Colts in 1997).
