Hammond is a small town in Union County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Hammond is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first settler in Hammond was Nicholas Hammond in 1824. The town was named after General John C. Hammond, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war. In 1851, Hammonds founded the town post office and built their first store on Main Street. A year later they built a gristmill on the South Fork of the White River. In 1857, they added a schoolhouse to their collection and also erected a church on White Avenue adjacent to their millstream. By 1860, there were ten residents in Hammond and twelve businesses had been established including three stores, two restaurants, one blacksmith shop and one harness shop specializing in farm machinery repairs/equipment sales; all of which are still active today! A few years later that number had grown to thirty-five inhabitants whenracrested 4th Street between State Road 12 and ISDN line for what is now Stonington Elementary School #2). On July 15th 1870 local resident Fenton Lovell donated land located just east of present day I-64 to be used for a new community college with an initial enrollment of sixty students but this project never came to fruition due to lack of funding or interest from both locals and Indiana state government officials ([1]). In 1905 local resident Mabel Dodge donated twenty acres (8 ha) north of present day US 64 along State Road 12 east of US 6 for use as agricultural land for growing corn; this project too never came to fruition due to lack of funding or interest from both locals and Indiana state government officials ([1]). On October 3rd 1909 local resident Linnie Newell donated eighty acres (36 ha) south side OF US 64 between current day PA 452ndwy & IPFW road (now I-465) for development as “a large city” [2]; however no further development ever took place as this proposal failed because it conflicted with other plans by same developers for adjoining properties that would have included retail space (& housing) on top of an existing shopping center that would have sprawled across 5 blocks long including 2 streets wide] making it difficult if not impossible for anyone actually living anywhere near where today’s I-465 & PA 452ndwy intersect make up much larger than just 300 homes!] Hammond has experienced several changes over its history: through out its history it has been home to several churches including First Baptist Church which was rebuilt in 1928 after being destroyed by fire;[3] Second Baptist Church which moved from its original location next door in 1925;[4] Methodist Episcopal Zion church which started meeting here back in 1893 before moving away around 1924 but returned briefly around 1935 before moving again into new facilities across street until relocating permanently here [5], then finally Hammond Presbyterian Church starting service here back at least 1907 before moving away soon afterwards but returning eventually within months after becoming unneeded because OFPW had taken over operations from GRFDSD - now known as Notre Dame High School - across street .
